. Map of Nowhere is a monumental and deeply complex work. As with his earlier large-scale prints, Map of an Englishman (2004) and Print for a Politician (2005), the artist draws on a wide range of visual and literary conventions, including cartography, Renaissance printmaking, allegorical fiction and satire. Created using five separate printing plates, Map of Nowhere is a compelling image that is indexical of Perryʼs artistic and personal identities. Inclusive of churches for Microsoft, Tesco and Starbucks and a shanty town on stilts labelled ʻFree Market Economyʼ, Perryʼs fictional island constitutes a subtle critique of the modern world that maps major themes such as post-colonialism, capitalism, sexuality and religion. Perry himself has noted, “My work has always had a guerrilla tactic, a stealth tactic, I want to make something that lives with the eye as a beautiful piece of art, but on closer inspection, a polemic or ideology will come out of it. . .
