EQs: How did the czars attempt to change Russia in the 1800s? How did the people react to change or lack

of it?

Czars: Actions and Reactions

• Actions of Alexander I (1801 – 1825) – became liberal, eased censorship on the people, promoted education and even considered freeing the serfs

• People’s reaction: Upon Alexander’s death, some Western thinking nobles led the Decembrist Revolt, attempting to make Russia a democracy

• Actions of Nicholas I (1825-1855) – Reacted negatively to the Decembrist Revolt…He unleashed oppression on the people…revoked people’s rights, isolated Russia from Western Europe…was a “despot”…”Orthodoxy, Autocracy and Nationalism”

• People’s Reaction: Nobles were upset since their economic activities were being disrupted by Nicholas’ anti-western policies…peasants became unhappy when nobles took it out on them

Czars: Actions and Reactions

• Actions of Alexander II (1855-1881): Due to Russia losing the Crimean War, he was forced to make his people happy…– he freed the serfs (peasants) in 1861– set up local governments called zemstvos– eased censorship of rights– tried to improve Russia’s military through

rapid foreign industrialization

• People’s reaction: They were dissatisfied since the reforms were SLOW…he was assassinated in 1881 by the People’s Will movement

Czars: Actions and Reactions

• Actions of Alexander III (1881-1894): Since his father was murdered, he revived all the policies of Nicholas I– He increased the power of the secret police– Restored strict censorship of rights– Exiled 1000s to Siberia– Launched Russification, which blamed

minorities and Jews for Russia’s problems

• People’s reaction: They embarked on pogroms, persecutions and massacres of Russian Jews…many Jews became refugees

Czars: Actions and Reactions

• Actions of Nicholas II (1894-1918): Tried to unify his people to fight for “the Faith, the Czar and the Fatherland”– Lost war w/Japan– Accidentally killed peaceful protestors on

“Bloody Sunday”…led to the October Manifesto of freedoms to the people

– Forced to create a Duma (people’s legislature)…then abolished it when they criticized him

– Appointed Peter Stolypin, who once again repressed people, then tried to revive Alexander II’s reforms (land reforms, zemstvos)

• People’s Reaction: REVOLUTION!!! And doom for Nicholas and his family…
