GOTTFRIED WILHELM VON LEIBNIZ BY: WILLIE JAMAUL BROWN & Q CALDWELL

WHO IS GOTTFRIED WILHELM VON LEIBNIZ?

• Born July 1, 1646

• Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz was a German philosopher, mathematician, as well as political adviser, praised both as a logician, metaphysician, and renowned for his independent invention of the differential, integral calculus and contribution to computing and computers. Wanted language to become clear and precise like mathematics.

GOTTFRIED WILHELM VON LEIBNIZ’S CONTRIBUTION TO COMPUTING

• During the 1670’s, Leibniz worked on the invention of a practical calculating machine that used the binary system and was capable of dividing, multiplying, and extracting roots. (Leibniz’s wheel)

•  This machine was an improvement on Pascal’s rudimentary adding machine and the true forerunner of the computer.

• Wanted to create an artificial intelligent calculator but wouldn’t be look at til the 1950

GOTTFRIED WILHELM VON LEIBNIZ’S CONTRIBUTION TO COMPUTING CONTINUED…

•  Leibniz was a strong advocate of the binary system and is credited with the early development of the binary number system.

•  Leibniz was prescient in seeing the appropriateness of the binary system in calculating machines. Binary numbers are ideal for machines simply because they only consist of two digits, 0 and 1. This system is the perfect numbering system for a computer base 2 or binary.

•  This is because all calculations in a computer are based on millions of transistors that are either in an “on” position or an “off” position.
