The primary goal of the Aca-
demic Enrichment Center is
to provide the support needed
to enhance the learning ex-
perience of all Cumberland
students and assist them in
graduating. This goal is
achieved through three ser-
vices: peer tutoring, writing
assistance, and assigned
study. If your student came
home with grades that you
feel could stand to be im-
proved, please encourage him
or her to access AEC services.
The AEC offers free peer tutor-
ing to all Cumberland stu-
dents in the major core cur-
riculum. Peer tutors are se-
lected by the faculty and work
closely with them to provide
an excellent supplement to
learning in the classroom.
Students seeking tutors may
stop by the center to request
contact information and make
appointments with tutors to
meet for tailor-made study
times and locations. The Cen-
ter also offers free writing
assistance through a student-
run writing lab offering peer
critiques on any form of writ-
ten medium. Currently, writing
assistance is offered each
Monday, Wednesday, and
Friday from 1pm to 5pm.
The AEC is also a great place
to study, and many student
athletes are assigned to the
Center by their coaches to
promote positive study habits
throughout the school year.
In addition to the Center's
most popular services, the
AEC also provides testing
services for the College Level
Examination Program (CLEP),
the ACTFL language test, and
the Millers Analogies Test
(MAT). CLEP testing allows
students to "test-out" of select
general elective coursework
such as Algebra, Biology, or
U.S. History by testing the
student in the basic subject
material. If a student can
pass with an average or
above-average score, the
testing results will satisfy the
requirements for that particu-
lar course. The ACTFL lan-
guage test works on the same
principal but with a large se-
lection of foreign languages.
Finally, the AEC offers the
MAT, which is a computer-
based graduate school en-
trance exam.
Contact the AEC's Coordinator
for details on any of these
services by email at
shenson@cumberland.edu or
by phone 615-547-1285.

Meet the EMSA Team:
Coordinator of Academic Enrichment
Sheridan Henson has been
serving Cumberland since
2006, initially working with
the School of Music and the
Arts, then Graduate Admis-
sions, and now as the Coordi-
nator of the Academic Enrich-
ment Center (AEC). A gradu-
ate of both the University of
Tennessee (B.A. '04) and
Cumberland University (M.S.
'09), Sheridan has an endur-
ing love for learning. In De-
cember of 2010, he was suc-
cessfully certified as a Level
One Learning Center Profes-
sional with the National Col-
lege Learning Center Associa-
tion. Of even greater interest,
Sheridan is currently instruct-
ing tutors in Cumberland's
first-ever tutor training pro-
gram: Cumberland University
Tutor Training Seminars
(CUTTS). After tutors complete
this intensive, two-semester,
program, Sheridan will be
able to apply on behalf of the
AEC for international accredi-
tation, approving the Center's
program. CUTTS will also open
doors for student tutors desir-
ing to pursue individual pro-
fessional tutoring certifica-
tions to augment their grow-
ing resumes.

Over the weekend of January 27, the eager wait for Cumberland
University students ended as the moving transition into Cumber-
land University‟s new four-story, 152-bed residence hall com-
menced. “South” Hall is for students who are at sophomore status
or above. This hall is a co-educational facility divided by floor. Along
with card access to the building for its residents, “South” Hall fea-
tures card swipe access to
the residential portions of
each floor. Each floor fea-
tures a large common room
with television and com-
fortable seating. Addition-
ally, the upper three floors
have dedicated study
rooms, vending areas, and
video monitored laundry
facilities. In the residential
areas, “South” Hall features four-person suites with double bed-
rooms and a shared bathroom facility. Students moving in are
discovering that the move-in process has been well worth the wait
as the new “South” Hall features many of the best amenities that
Residence Halls offer. Up next for Cumberland University is the
remodeling of the Mary White Learning Commons as well as a
date still-to-be named
ground breaking of a new
Student Union to be
called, “The Cumberland
Café”.

The Office of the Dean of Students hosted an Art Contest in conjunction with the Colors of Acculturation event last semester. A committee selected artwork that most represented the theme of the 2011 contest, Colors of Acculturation: Multicultural Inclusion at Cumberland University. Winning artwork remained in the property of Cumberland University for display at various locations on the Cumberland University campus.
The Cumberland University Student Programming Board (SPB) is excited to an-
nounce, as part of the CU @ 8 Series, the “End of Racism Comedy and Lecture
Tour” featuring Preacher Moss, coming to Cumberland University on Thursday,
February 2nd. This is a must see event to kick off Black History Month that you
won‟t want to miss. Winner of the 2008 and 2009 APCA Best Diversity Act and
the Campus Activities Today 2009 Best Diversity Artist, Preacher Moss‟s com-
edy, spoken word, and heartfelt insights opens the door to diversity discussion
and understanding like never before.
Preacher Moss says this of the tour:
“The objective of „End of Racism‟ is to carefully put a smile in the hearts of all brothers and sisters. Thus developing a dialogue whereby we
see the essential need to put the human back in Humanity. EOR was once a tour, became a movement...we now seek to make the „End of
Racism‟ a reality!”
Preacher Moss will make you laugh, make you think, make you cry, make you laugh so hard you cry, and you‟ll never be the same again! We
would like to personally invite community members to share this special event with the students, faculty, and staff of Cumberland University
as we seek to make the „End of Racism‟ a reality in Wilson County and beyond. EOR will be held in Baird Chapel of Memorial Hall at 8:00
pm. Admission is free for all faculty, staff and students with their Cumberland ID. Visitors and Guests are only $5.00, but SPB would like to
offer a special $2.00 discount to CUPA members for all campus events. This includes Preacher Moss and next month‟s diversity event fea-
turing Mo Amer. Please share this information with your friends, family, religious community, and coworkers as we sincerely hope to spread
this vital message to as many in our community as possible.
