nb

• A clause is a group of words with its own subject and verb.

• There are two basic kinds of clauses, and there is an important difference between them. The two kinds are independent and dependent. BrainpopBrainpop--

stop after complex sentencesstop after complex sentences

I. Independent Clause

• Independent clauses- have a subject and a verb and can stand by itself.

• These sentences can be short or long. What is important is that the clause can express a complete thought and can stand by itself as a sentence.

Examples of independent clauses:

• They lived on an island.• (They is the subject and lived on

an island is the predicate.)

• Native Americans were self sufficient.

Number your paper 1-5. Write yes or no if the sentence is an

independent clause.

• 1. before the settlers came• 2. because it supplied all their needs• 3. they left the land in its original

condition• 4. when they hunted the animal• 5. they used every part of it

Number your paper 1-5. Write yes or no if the sentence is an

independent clause.

• 1. before the settlers came-no• 2. because it supplied all their needs-no• 3. they left the land in its original

condition-yes• 4. when they hunted the animal-no• 5. they used every part of it-yes

II. Dependent Clauses• A dependent clause has a subject and

a verb but cannot stand by itself as a complete sentence.

• Something to remember…ask yourself “Is this a complete thought, or do you need more information?”

• More info= subordinate clause

Examples of Dependent or

Subordinate Clauses• Ex: until they were attacked• (This doesn’t tell me who was attacked or

what they did until they were attacked. It leaves me needing more information.)

• How could I fix it?

• Ex: When the bicycle had a flat tire• What more do I need here?

Number your paper 6-8 skipping lines. Add an independent clause to the dependent clause to make it a complete sentence.

Add end marks.

• 6. When my family visited a tropical island, ______.

• 7. Because he is interested in surfing, _________.

• 8. ________until the sun set.
