San Miguel Special Education School

No publicly funded schools for deaf children in state of Guanajuato, Mexico

IF deaf children go to school- sent to public school- no special services provided

EEESMA opened on September 3, 2012 to assist deaf children

Seven local residents joined together to create the school

All funding is from donations

3 Mexican teachers were hired

School opened with 6 students, currently has 23 (enrolled) ages 5-55

Course Goals and Outcomes

Course Goals Be cognizant of differences in

culture between the U.S. and Mexico for both deaf and hearing

Have experience with planning and implementing experience-based lessons

Develop basic communication skills in Mexican Sign Language

Learning Outcomes Describe aloud and in

writing several differences between U.S. and Mexican culture

Create and implement experience-based lessons

Initiate and maintain a basic conversation in Mexican Sign Language
