SESSION 4: LEADERSHIP
GIT Mentor Protégé ProgramVirginia/February 10, 2016
American women earn about 60% of the undergraduate and master’s degrees
Women are 57% of the professional workforce
Center for American Progress - March 2014: https://www.americanprogress.org/issues/women/report/2014/03/07/85457/fact-sheet-the-womens-leadership-gap/
Females in the Workforce
• 14.6% of Executive Positions
Females in Leadership
Center for American Progress - March 2014: https://www.americanprogress.org/issues/women/report/2014/03/07/85457/fact-sheet-the-womens-leadership-gap/
And yet…Although they hold almost 60 percent of all professional-level jobs, American women lag substantially behind men when it comes to their representation in leadership positions:
They are only 14.6 percent of executive officers, 8.1 percent of top earners, and 4.6 percent of Fortune 500 CEOs. They hold just 16.9 percent of Fortune 500 board seats.
Women
Men
Women make up about 24% of all positions in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math fields
Center for American Progress - March 2014: https://www.americanprogress.org/issues/women/report/2014/03/07/85457/fact-sheet-the-womens-leadership-gap/
Females in STEM
Women
Men
Women continue to be underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, art design, and mathematics (STEM) fields and in leadership positions.
About 60% Women in the Workforce… Yet Less than 15% in Leadership Positions
IF there are only 24% of Women in STEM… Imagine what the percent of women are in STEM Leadership Positions?
?
How do you take your STEM talents from the CLASSROOM to the BOARDROOM?
Classroom to the Boardroom
Do you think the journey to the boardroom is a process by default or by design?
Having an interest in and studying STEM will get you a seat at the table. But how do you get the seat at the head of the table??(Hint: Leadership Skills)
We need to be proactive about developing leadership skills!
?
