Otis GeN2 Comfort system: The Benefits
➊ Replacing conventional steel ropes with smooth, polyurethane-coated
steel belt results in a quieter and smoother ride.
➋ A gearless machine controlled by a closed loop variable frequency drive
provides a comfortable ride with outstanding stopping accuracy.
➌ A low-inertia gearless machine with a permanent magnet (PM) synchronous
motor means energy savings and reduced operating costs.
➍ The belts and gearless machine with sealed-for-life bearings require no
addition of oil or polluting lubricants and thus protect the environment.
➎ The interaction of the flat, coated steel belt with the smooth-surface
crowned sheaves results in reduced belt wear.
➏ A flexible belt means a more compact machine which removes the need
for a machine room and reduces building costs.
➐ Otis’ PULSE™ system continually monitors the status of the belt’s steel
cords 24h/7d.
➑ A patented battery-operated rescue system with electronic speed moni-
toring enables safe and fast rescue of a trapped passenger in the event
of a power failure.
➒ With the machine on the rails, loads are transferred down to the pit thereby
improving interface and reducing structural building costs.
➓ GeN2 Comfort technology enables rapid, safe and controlled installation
that doesn’t interfere with other building trades.
 CONVENTIONAL STEEL ROPES
The stiffness of conventional steel ropes requires a largebending radius.
 FLEXIBLE STEEL BELTS
The polyurethane-coated flat steel belt is up to 20% lighterand lasts up to 3 times longer than conventional ropes. Itsflexibility results in a much smaller bending radius.
 COMPACT GEARLESS MACHINE
A sheave - which can be as small as 8 cm in diameter -hasallowed Otis to design a machine that is up to 70% smallerthan conventional machines.
 MACHINE ROOM SYSTEM
In a conventional system, the large machine and controllerrequire a machine room typically positioned above the hoistway. All bearing loads are supported by the building structure.
 MACHINE ROOMLESS SYSTEM
The compact GeN2 gearless machine does not require amachine room and can be easily positioned on top of the carand counterweight rails. This means all bearing loads can betransferred to the pit, thus reducing structural building costs.
 CONVENTIONAL MACHINE
The broad bending radius of steel ropes requires a largemachine with a sheave that is typically 50-60 cm in diameter.

UNRIVALLED RIDE QUALITY
Replacing metal ropes with smooth flatbelts means a quieter and smoother rideEnhanced ride quality is achieved through thecombination of a number of factors: Otis’ flatpolyurethane-coated steel belt which eliminatesthe metal-to-metal effect of conventionalropes together with the specially designedcrowned-surface sheaves (with no twisting ofthe belt through 180°) results in quiet operation. The gearless machine combined with an analogload-weighing device and a closed-loop variablefrequency drive with vector control enable asmooth ride with outstanding stopping accuracy(within +/- 3 mm at every landing). Cumula-tively, these features have allowed Otis toachieve a quiet, smooth and comfortable rideexperience. With appropriate treatment of thehoistway walls, the low noise gearlessmachine mounted on isolation rubber padsreduces vibration to the building and keepsaverage noise levels in adjacent rooms tobelow 30 dB(A) - in compliance with strict EUbuilding regulations.
A HIGHLY EFFICIENT MACHINE
A flexible belt means a more compactmachine The low inertia gearless machine with sealed-for-life bearings is equipped with a highlyefficient PM synchronous motor of radialconstruction.
The result is a machine which is up to
• 50% more efficient than conventionalgeared machines.
• 10% more efficient than conventional gearless machines with induction asyn-chronous motors.
• 15% more efficient than other machineswith PM motors of axial constructiondesign.

ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY
Lubrication-free and more energy efficient Neither the belts nor the gearless machinewith sealed-for-life bearings require any formof polluting lubricants. The low-inertia gearless PM machine, controlledwith a closed-loop variable frequency drivewith vector control, results in:
• Substantial energy cost savings when com-pared with conventional machines.
• Reduction of power installed thereby reducingoperational cost.
• Lower starting and nominal currents thusreducing the feeder size lines and installationcosts.
Additionally, the VF drive suspend-mode featurefurther reduces energy consumption.
INCREASED RELIABILITY
Reliable by design and durable by construction The long-lasting coated steel belt, the smoothcrowned sheaves and the reduction of movingparts in the gearless machine dramaticallyreduce wear and increase durability.
Reliability and safety are further enhancedwith Otis’ PULSE electronic system whichcontinually monitors the status of the belt’ssteel cords 24h/7d. Contrary to current visualinspections of conventional steel ropes, theOtis PULSE system automatically detects andinforms Otis technicians on the quality of thebelt cords, thus eliminating downtime andgreatly enhancing the reliability of the inspection.
Otis’ PULSE system monitors the integrity of belt cords 24h/7d.
Otis GeN2 innovative features reflect our absolute commitment to safety.

SAFETY FEATURES
For lift users and service technicians
• Door Deterrent DeviceIf the car is stopped between floors, adeterrent device prevents the car door fromopening. Hence a person cannot take therisk of exiting.
• Hoistway Access DetectionTo protect a person entering the hoistway, aspecial safety feature prevents the lift fromoperating after a landing door has beenopened.
• Rescue SystemA patented, battery-operated rescue systemwith electronic speed monitoring enablesthe safe and fast rescue of trapped passengersin the event of a power failure.
• LAMBDA™ 2D – Entrance ProtectionA screen of infrared beams acts as an invisiblesafety curtain. When an obstacle breaksthis screen, the sensitive LAMBDA 2 systemdetects it and immediately reopens thedoors.
• Stopping AccuracyThe belt’s reduced stretch compared toconventional steel ropes together with aclosed loop VF control results in outstandingstopping accuracy (within +/-3 mm at everylanding).
• Machine Brake SystemTo further improve safety, the machine’sdual brake system is equipped with twoswitches to prevent the lift from movingbefore the brake is fully released.
RAPID INSTALLATION
A controlled process minimizes installation time and improves safetyWith all major components located inside thehoistway, the streamlined installation processof the GeN2 Comfort lift has minimal impacton building construction and other trades.
The machine is integrated on top of the railsthus virtually eliminating the interface with thebuilding. The car serves as a constructionplatform for rapid installation and alignment of rails.
Finally, the controller and drive are integratedinto a single cabinet which is factory pre-tested.

OPTIMA
The Optima car perfectly illustrates the principle that elegance can be achieved
through simplicity - provided it’s based on an inspired idea. With the Optima
design, that idea is embodied by the car operating panel actually illuminating the
car. Important to the car’s refined appearance are the panels themselves. In three
finishes, they are cheering to the eye and easy to maintain. In fact it is the balance
between the aesthetic and the practical that defines the Optima car.
Groundbreaking technology complemented by class leading aesthetics.
