MessagefromthePresident
Asastate-fundedagency,GavilanCollegehascertainlybeencognizantof
thecurrenttougheconomictimes.Fortunately,thebudgetcompromise
reachedbythelegislatureandgovernorrecognizestheimportantcontri-
butionsCommunityCollegesmakeinhelpingCaliforniaseconomygrow.
CommunityCollegeenrollmentlevelsareupacrossthestate,asun-
employedworkersreturntocollegeforeducationandretraining,anduniversity-boundstudentssavemoneybycompletingtheirlower-division
courseworkatcommunitycolleges.AtGavilanCollege,Springenrollment
isup17%,vs.9.5%statewide,continuingathree-yeartrendofdouble-
digitenrollmentgrowth.
Althoughtherearecutsinthestatebudget,(suchaseliminatingthe0.68%
COLAforthecurrentyear),GavilanCollegeremainsinastrongnancialposi-
tion,thankstoprudentandconservativebudgetingandtheparticipationofsta,
studentsandfacultyinanExpenditureReductionTaskForce.Throughthework
oftheTaskForce,over$860,000inbudgetreductionshavebeenidentiedand
acceptedforthecurrentyear,andadditionalreductionshavebeenidentiedfor2009-10.Nostawillbelaido,andstudentswillnotbeturnedawaytoachieve
thesereductions.
WecontinuetoimplementMeasureEcompletingthepurchaseoflandfortwo
futurecampusesinCoyoteValleyandSanBenitoCounty.Renovationsonfour
maincampusbuildingswillbecompletedthisyear.Toaccommodateallofthe
additionalstudentsseekinghighereducation,weareaddingmoreportablestruc-
turesandseekingadditionalspacetorentthroughoutthedistrict.
