2008 National AHEC Organization Award for Excellence in Health Careers for the Pathway to Med School Program
The Albany Area Primary Health Care, Inc.,
Southwest Georgia Family Medicine Residency,
and the Southwest Georgia Area Health
Education Center (SOWEGA-AHEC) have
developed the Pathway to Med School Program
specifically for college students enrolled in an
approved pre-med curriculum who plan to attend
medical school and pursue the primary care
specialties of:
Family Medicine
Internal Medicine
OB-GYN
Pediatrics
General Surgery
The program can accept only a limited number of
students and consists of shadowing primary care
physicians and working on practice-based
community research projects. Participating in the
program and attending key seminars will enhance
the participants’ ability to gain admission into
medical school.
“My admissions interviewer was clearly
impressed with all of the shadowing
which she said made me, ‘well prepared’
for medical school.”
-Pathway Student
The Program
The SOWEGA-AHEC Pathway to Med School
program is a 160-hour structured residential
experience featuring 60% clinical shadowing and
40% community research. The program is offered in
a four-week summer block and housing is provided
at no charge. The program also includes seminars
and round-table discussions, as well as mentoring by
primary care physicians. All experiences will take
place in SOWEGA-AHEC’s 38-county service area.
