A. Desired Outcome #1:  Demonstrate specific embalming skills and techniques to secure future employment.      

•  Observation by faculty to determine if student is proficient in all required skills. 

• Competency requires student to accomplish seven skills to pass the lab. 

• Embalming case reports completed for each case that is approved by preceptor and program director. 

No  Ratio/theory, tutoring sessions, and  examinations have been used to gauge student success.   

A. Findings:  • 100% of students successfully 

completed the required technical skills.

  B. Target/Criterion:  100% of students will successfully demonstrate the technical skills in embalming.

The mission of the Funeral Service Education Program is to provide comprehensive educational experiences for each funeral service student that will enable him/her to become a caring, compassionate, committed, competent and ethical practitioner in the funeral service profession.

A. Desired Outcome #2:   Increase the pass rate for students on the arts portion of the National Board Exam (NBE). 

•  Identify areas of weakness through written assessments. 

• Reinforce weak areas in didactic settings to increase pass rates. 

No  Morticians Assessment Testing Simulator (MATS) 

A. Findings:  • 100% (4 students) passed the 

NBE with an average of 81%.    Target Met  

  B. Target/Criterion: 70% of students will score 80% or above on the Morticians Assessment Testing Simulator (MATS) and written assessment practice tests.

responded to the survey and indicated that 95% of students met entry‐level skill requirements. 

• Employers recommended that students improve dress, attitude, personal appearance, better study skills, and professionalism.

Use of Assessment Results 2008-2009

Date Prepared: March 1, 2010 Desired Outcome #1: Demonstrate specific embalming skills and techniques to secure future employment. Target: 100% of students will successfully demonstrate the technical skills in embalming. Findings: • 100% of students successfully completed the required technical skills. Updated Use of Results: • Outcome target met. In order to assure continued high level of performance, student

skills are monitored in the Embalming Labs (FSED-141 and FSED-142) preceptors were trained and evaluated using the newly developed manual/handbook. A new Clinical Evaluation Form was also developed to provide feedback to the program director regarding clinical learning experiences.

appearance, better study skills, and professionalism. Updated Use of Results: • A Mock Funeral Arrangement assignment was developed to assess students’ ability

to perform funeral service functions in a professional manner and used beginning Summer 2009. Through discussions with advisory committee members, this assignment led to the development of a new course required in the major. The course, FSED-169: Funeral Directing Practicum exposes students to actual funeral service procedures under the supervision of professional staff; observation and guided discovery designed to assist students master professional competencies required when arranging funeral service functions. Additionally, the program implemented a dress code and documented this in the program’s Student Handbook.

Evidence Included: A. Master Syllabus for a new course, FSED-169: Funeral Directing Practicum,

approved December 2009. B. Funeral Service Education Program Policies and Procedures Manual revised August

2009 with information on student dress code at clinical/practicum sites (highlighted text on page 20).
