Statement of Intent

Design is in part about solving problems. This has been the view of many influential designers, Charles Eames being a notable one. He described his ideas in an interview “What is Design” in 1972. When asked simply what his definition of design was he answered, “ A plan for arranging elements in such a way as to best accomplish a purpose.” In other words, design is about solving problems in the best way possible. He adds to this that constraints and needs are a large part, the driving force even, of design. This philosophy has driven me through my design processes and my studies.

REskin

Fall 2011

REskin focused on the repositioning and re-cladding of an old refrigerated warehouse in Chicago’s West Loop neighborhood. The focus of the studio was on the skin of the building and how its appearance could be driven parametrically by environmental data. In this project’s case this was Ecotect. Solar data was collected and then turned into a visual form and then plugged into a custom Revit curtain wall family. The amount of sunlight controlled the depth and aperture values for the family, resulting in a subtle pattern across the building’s facade.

Cranbrook Wellness Center

Fall 2010/Spring 2011

The Cranbrook Welness center was a project completed over two separate quarters of the Structure, Environment, Construction Studio. The project is a comprehensive attempt to investigate the melding of different design systems and how their integration can be dealt with through a design strategy. The proposed building is a small spa on the campus of the famous Cranbrook School outside of Detriot, MI. Investigations are carried out at three different scales, Body, Hand and Site. Rather than design an entire building in every detail, design strategies are developed and applied to selective parts of the building, allowing room for extrapolation.

Reciprocity

Fall 2009Group Members: Jason Butz, Carla Landa

Reciprocity was a project that was developed for a design competition that dealt with the sustainable city. The idea was to deal with waste in a way that lessened its negative impacts and transformed it into a usable product or form. The jumping off point was that of the mushroom, nature’s great decomposers. The cycle of waste decomposition was studied and used to develop with the recycling and decomposition systems of the project. The project manifested itself as a series of pods along the water’s edge serving as the base of a new sustainable city or as an intervention along a river in an existing city.

Reciprocity tried to address the problems of waste in the traditional city by reprocessing them and closing broken cycles.

To the right recycling and re-use systems inside the pods are shown. There are four main cycles each dealing with the re-use of a different type of material.

Alteration 2010

Spring 2010Collaborative Studio Project

Movement with a connection to place. This project, actually a commission from the city of Greenville, SC and the South Carolina chapter of the AIA, was installed in downtown Greenville, SC to kick of Architecture Month 2010. The project took the form of a kinetic sculpture, which was placed in a water feature between the two buildings of the Peace Center for the Preforming Arts. The Sculpture attempted to activate the little used space with noise, movement and color, while linking its motion to the mill-town heritage of Greenville: the sculpture derived its energy from a water wheel placed in the flume of the water feature.

Kinetic Sculpture

Spring 2010Group Members: Will Allport, Matthew Brown, Dave Odom

This project was completed as a warm-up exercise prior to Alteration 2010. Students were tasked to come up with a kinetic sculpture out of household and found objects which exploited their movement in some way. For this sculpture we chose umbrella arms as they contained many moving joints and produce a sine wave motion. These umbrella arms were attached to an armature allowing them to move freely. Moving parts were highlighted with red paint so that the motion could be followed easily.

Re-Ligare Institute

Spring 2010Group Members: Chris Newell, Dave Odom

Synthesis was the focus of this final studio of my undergraduate work. Earlier methods of design learned in the past four years are all called upon in this studio which asked for a comprehensive building solution, all the way down to fully worked out details. This project, done for an ACSA student competition, charged the designer with the task of designing a 10,000 sq. ft. spa and wellness center the “Re-ligare Institute”. The concept the project took on was that of “reconnecting with self by reconnecting with place”.The building itself is integrated into the site metaphorically with a donut like structure which dives under the ground only to reappear to support another part of the building.

Fall 2009Group Member: John Oxenfeld

REgain focused on the reuse of a dilapidated industrial site in Asheville, NC. Special consideration was to be given to the urban fabric of the city and the sustainability of the building and overall site. Initial site studies noted the lack of connection of the site to the larger body of Asheville. What developed was a center of live work and gallery space for artists and future e-commerce jobs, focusing on the motif of nerves to connect the site physically, emotionally and virtually to Asheville and the larger world. Community space was created by the inclusion of a gallery and connection to the proposed Riverlink parkway. The form of the building itself also mimics nerves in it form and inclusion of a green screen which both permeates and envelopes the building.

The atrium space becomes a collaboration space between the disciplines of art and e-industry. It also serves as a community gallery space. It allows for the work of the inhabitants to be displayed to the public and show their process.

Mid-Rise Mixed Use

Spring 2009

Urban Fabric was the issue addressed in this project. The task was the design of a mid-rise, mixed use building for downtown Greenville, South Carolina. Special consideration had to be given to the building because it occupies the most prominent corner of downtown, a valuable piece of real estate. The solution was to make the building interesting not only when viewed from the corner, but also to the residents. The façade juts out at various points to make the views of the building dramatic as well as to take advantage of views and provide balconies. The building becomes a linchpin in the urban fabric.

Heavy emphasis was placed on the use of study modeling and the modeling process in general. This lead to the creation of many iterations of form and allowed the process to be organic and fluid.

Spatial analysis was conducted through the use of a floor plan use perspective. This shows how retail commercial, circulation and living space stack in the building.

Graphic Communication

Spring 2009

Graphic Communication was an exploration into communicating the message and design intent through graphics and visual representation. The class consisted of an intense period of strengthening drawing techniques, followed by the perfection in a final drawing testing all of the skills acquired.
