Purpose of the Program

Will establish standards and objectives for raising the level of English proficiency that are derived from the four recognized domains of speaking, listening, reading, and writing, with special emphasis on the spoken part

FOCUS Standards Definitions

Benchmark: A specific statement of what a student should

know and be able to do in each of the Levels

Standard: A general statement of what a student should

know and be able to do in each of the Levels

Indicator: A statement of the knowledge or skills which a

student demonstrates in order to meet the benchmark.

Indicators are critical to understanding the standards andbenchmarks and are intended to be met by all students.

FOCUS Standards Descriptions

Level OStandard: The student listens to spoken English to develop communicative competence in social and academic language use.Benchmark: The student uses English to process and construct meaning. (eleven indicators suggested)

Level AStandard: The student speaks in English in socially and academically appropriate ways Benchmark: The student uses English to convey meaning in spoken form. (seven indicators suggested)

Level BStandard: The student speaks in English with right intonation, modulation and expressions. Also achieves success in content area. Uses ideas and content in speakingBenchmark1: Uses word analysis strategiesBenchmark2: Presentation Skills Benchmark 3: GD and PI Skills

Knowledge Base Outcomes

Level O: Interacts with an adult or peer in a formal or informal setting using appropriate language in simple sentences.

Level A: Participates in social conversation with peers and adults on familiar topics by asking and answering questions and soliciting information.

Level B: Participates in social conversation with peers and adults on various topics fluently, impressing the listener with his/her overall communication skills

Training Methodologies

Role-play between two learners. Compare and contrast the level of formality in the two situations

listen to sound recordings and present to their peers versus presentation to Trainer. Compare and contrast the level of formality

listen to sound recordings of a student presentation to their peers while sitting informally in a circle and the same presentation to their peers while standing at a podium.
