WHY TV OVER IP? MORE QUALITY, MORE INTERACTIVITY, MORE CONNECTIVITY
The hospitality industry has used Analog TV for years. Although these are low cost and effective solutions, they present several limitations:
-‐ Obsolete technology, the Switch-‐off deadline of analogic broadcast systems is already set.
-‐ Low image quality, specially with the new Digital Television Sets (LCD; Plasma) that are already installed in many hotels.
-‐ Does not support High Definition TV.
-‐ Complex maintenance and lack of TV solution control.
On the other hand, the end user behaviour has changed profoundly. Guests want to feel “at home” and access the same functionalities that they have at their home entertainment systems. The solution to serve these end users is to offer EPG, VIDEO-‐ON-‐DEMAND, TRIC PLAY (pause and rewind of live TV), and other services specifically designed to the hospitality industry.
Over all these advantages, is the fact that with IPTV the hotel can maintain a permanent link with its guest, even if they’re watching television, which allows the hotel to send informative messages or specific promotions in footnotes.
As a result, the hotels will increase their revenues, creating a differentiated offer
of a premium television system, promoting the loyalty of their guests.
THE SOLUTION
Digital Television over IP
The system includes a set of antennas for satellite reception with 4 exits LNB ́s, signal transport over RG11 coax to the hotel datacentre.
In the datacentre the solution is installed in a rack where the active components are set – The multi-‐switch DVB-‐S, the IPTV gateways, the application server and the VOD server.
In the room, or in the common areas, all television sets are equipped with a Set-‐top-‐box (STB), connected to the IP network by a CAT5 or CAT6 cable ended in a RJ45 and connected to the television set by HDMI.
The user interaction is made with an IR remote control IR. The STB captures the channel multicast and presents it in the television set.
The same remote control is used for both the STB and the television set.
The whole system is remotely monitored by Impresa.DGSM, through a safe WAN link, for maintenance and diagnose of the solution functional status.
SOLUTION FUNCTIONALITIES
Interactive Services
The solution includes a central server to store the content, and a Portal server to attend the visualization requests. This last server controls the whole solution and the communication between the solution and the hotel information system through its standard interfaces.
The solution works over IP, which means that it is necessary to ensure the connectivity in all rooms and relevant communal areas.
The end-‐user, interacting with the remote control, can browse through the different Portal pages that are visible in the television set, accessing information, free content or paid content described latter in this document.
The whole system is remotely monitored by Impresa.DGSM through a safe WAN connection for maintenance, diagnose, and content upload.
In-‐Room-‐Entertainment
The guest visualization component of the solution is based in a Portal, allowing an easy configuration and adaptation to the hotel requests.
This way, the hotels together with Impresa.DGSM, can configure each screen the way it better fits its needs, aligning the image and the services offered to the hotel occupation profile and customer segment.
The Portal pages exhibit to the end-‐user in the television set can be partially personalized and approved by the hotels. All services offered (account, news, flight information, etc.) will always have a prior approval from the hotel.
The solution has some very innovative characteristics when compared with other platforms, being its main goal to minimize the effort developed by the hotel in interacting with its guests and monetizing the content and Internet the business.
On top the full integration with the hotel BackOffice, which allows the integrated invoicing of the services and the visualization of the invoices in the television set, the solution also facilitates a local BackOffice to upload specific hotel content. It is also possible for the hotel to retrieve reports from the system on content consumption.
The Portal, and all associated services can have different configurations according with the different end-‐user segments occupying the rooms.
Through check-‐in, and based on the identification of the client by the receptionist, the solution will offer the client information and content adapted to its needs. This will allow the hotel to optimize its offer and better satisfy its guests needs.

Room Status From the television set it is possible for the housekeeping to inform the reception on the cleaning status of each room. From now on, this information will be available on real time.
Mini-‐Bar To debit mini-‐bar from the television set is now a reality. With this functionality the hotel effectively controls its guests consumptions.
Maintenance With this functionality the housekeeping teams can, in real time, inform the maintenance department so that all necessary activities can be executed in a faster way.
Hotel
Area exclusively dedicated to the hotel. In this area the hotel will exploit all the advantages of the solution and promote its services and infrastructures in a dynamic way, interacting with the customers in an effective approach.
It will be delivered to the hotel a very user-‐friendly BackOffice, where all relevant information will be put online. With this solution the hotel will reduce its production costs on information relative to the hotel activities.
Promotions, incentives to product acquisition, and information, will freely flow within this area fully dedicated to the hotel.
The Group area is a value added service since it will increase the corporate clients value offer. From this area the hotel will share with its clients all information related to the meetings they are attending – schedules, venues, meeting contents and any other relevant content.
The hotel services area will have a terrific impact in the daily performance of the hotel. The solution incorporates several functionalities that will increase the efficiency of the daily management of the hotel, such as an area where, from the television set, the housekeeping manager can input information into the central BackOffice.

When the guest chooses the portal language, the respective film version will automatically be retrieved.
The films are divided in seven distinct categories:

Information
In the information area the guests will access a cast number of real time information.
Impresa.DGSM will supply content from Google News and any other sources of information so the guest can be informed of what’s happening in the world and particularly around the hotel.
Functions such as weather, touristic circuits, hotel surroundings, will be available to the guest. The solution also supplies access to a limited number of radio stations.
Video on Demand
The solution of digital video content distribution includes the offer of Video-‐On-‐Demand.
Impresa.DGSM proposal includes the content licencing of films, series and musical concerts. With this offer, all necessary conditions for the success of the VOD business are ensured.
COMPATIBILITY AND CERTIFICATION
The solution is fully compatible with the majority of the television operators’ satellite signal transmissions. All components were fully tested demonstrating optimal performance under very strict rules.
All components used are SmartDTV and Nagravision certified.
