viewofwhatsuccesslookslike.Howdoweknowthataprojectissuccessful?

Identifyingsuccesscriteria/indicators.Successindicatorsmustevidencethatchangehasoccurred(notjust

thattheprojecthastakenplace).Forexample,aprojectmaydeliver5trainingsessions.Theindicatorof

successisnotjustthat5sessionshavebeendelivered,moreimportantlyitisthattraineeslearntsomething

newandwereabletousethisnewlearning.Similarly,creatingnewaccessroutesisonlyreallysuccessfulif

thereisevidencethatmorepeopleusethesite.Equally,numberofhectaresofwoodlandcleared/restoredis

onlyapartialmeasureofsuccess;thetruesuccessoftheprojectwillbewhennewgroundfloraisestablished

andotherbiodiversityimprovements(althoughthismaytakelongerthantheprojectdurationtoachieve).

Thiscanalsobeunderstoodasoutputsandoutcomes(seefigure1below).AgreedsuccessindicatorsfortheoverallDerwentWISEprogrammeandforeachprojectareshownbelow.

Progressagainstthesewillbepresentedinaninterimandfinalreport.

Monitoringandmeasuringsuccess.ThesuccessofDerwentWISEwillbemeasuredusingbothquantitative

andqualitativemethods.Quantitativerecordsarealreadykeptbyprojectstaffaspartofongoingprojectmonitoring.Theserecordswill

provide‘headline’figuresandstatisticstoinformtheevaluation.Theserecordswillincludenumberof

sites/hectaresimproved;numberofvolunteers/participants;numberofwebsitehits;quantitativefeedback

questionnaires;photographicevidenceofachievements.

Qualitativerecordswillprovideevidencethatsuccessmeasureshavebeenachieved(buttheywillnotbeginto

assesshowoftenthishas/hasnothappened).Qualitativerecordstellastory.Forexample,afamilythathas

takenpartinaneventandthenbeeninspiredtofeedbirdsintheirowngarden,becomeDWTmembersand

volunteerwithintheirlocalcommunityisagreatsuccessstory,evenifthereisnofeedbackfromotherfamilies

attheevent.Qualitativerecordscouldbeintheformofanecdotalcomments,projectstaffobservations,social

mediainteraction,Tumblrcontributions,photography,filmetc.

Suggestedevaluationquestionsandapproachesareappended.Thesewillalsobeavailableasatoolkitwhich

canbedevelopedandaddedtothroughouttheproject.

2.AgreedoutcomesandsuccesscriteriaOverallsuccesscriteriaandevaluationthemeshavebeenidentified.Theseapplytotheprojectasawholeand

throughouttheevaluationperiodinformationwillbecollectedwhichwillevidencethesesuccesscriteria.

Inaddition,theevaluationwillseektoevaluatethestrengthsandsuccessoftheDerwentWISEpartnership.Thiswilllargelybeachievedbyinterviewingprojectstaffandpartnerstogainabetterunderstandingoftheeffectivenessofthepartnership.Thekeyobjectiveofthispartoftheevaluation

willbetoidentifylearningwhichcanbesharedwithotherLandscapePartnershipsandusedtoinform

futurepartnershipprogrammes.

3.CasestudiesIllustrativecasestudieswillbecentraltothewaythefinalevaluationisreported.Thesewillbepresentedas

shortfilms.Wearestartingtoworkonapossiblelistofcasestudiesbutitisimportanttothinkofthisasan

evolvingpieceofwork;theremaybegoodstoriesarisinglaterintheproject.Thesummaryoflikelyfilmcase

studiespresentedbelowis,therefore,correctattheendofNovember2015.Afulllistoftheprojects
