Homework Analysis Task for 28/09/2012

Select ONE of the posters on the slides that follow. You are going to produce an analysis of the poster using all the skills you have learned so far.

Make plenty of notes first – use the grid you are given. A copy is provided on the last slide, so you can print off more, as you need them.

Things to consider:

•Characters and how they have been represented – costume, body language, props, facial expression, associated colours, cinematography, lighting etc.

•Setting – what can you see? How has it been shot? What is the dominant colour palette? Lighting?

•Words/ slogans/ title – how do these help anchor the image? What words effect this and what connotations do they build up? What about the style of font used?

•Anything else noteworthy…

Aim to describe what you can see in as much detail as possible first of all, using the correct terminology where this is required.

Now write this up using the structure below:

1.Call your homework: Analysis of………… Film Poster

2.Write a brief introduction stating that your task was to analyse the media language in a film poster, focussing on mise-en-scene and cinematography.

3.Write each feature up as a separate paragraph – start by describing what you see. Then add some comment on what this suggests or might mean, what effect it adds to the poster.

4.Conclude by summarising the main image the poster creates of the film – the way it represents it to us. How do you think this will appeal to its potential audience?
