CONTENTSFrom lateral to medial: Femoral nerve and its (terminal) branches Femoral sheath and its contents:

Femoral artery and several of its branches.Femoral vein and its proximal tributaries (e.g.,

the great saphenous and deep femoral veins).Deep inguinal lymph nodes and associated

lymphatic vessels

IN THE CLINICa) femoral artery and femoral vein are

highly palpable (used for pulse taking)b) Catheterizationc) superficial position of the femoral

artery in the femoral triangle also makes it vulnerable to traumatic injury, especially laceration

d) Commonly, both the femoral artery and vein are lacerated in anterior thigh wounds because they lie close together

e) When it is necessary to ligate the femoral artery, anastomosis of branches of the femoral artery with other arteries that cross the hip joint, may supply blood to the lower limb

f) Heavy bleeding in the lower limb may be stopped by applying pressure on some points in the femoral triangle

g) Important for coronary angioplasty & peripheral angioplasty
