4PHOBIA.What is a phobia?According to the American Psychiatric Association, a phobia is an irrational and excessive fear of an object or situation. In most cases, the phobia involves a sense of endangerment or a fear of harm. For example, those suffering from agoraphobia fear being trapped inan inescapable place or situation.

Symptoms of PhobiasPhobic symptoms can occur through exposure to the fear object orsituation, or sometimes simply thinking about the feared object can lead to a response. Common symptoms associated with phobias include:

Dizziness

Breathlessness

Nausea

A sense of unreality

Fear of dying

In some cases, these symptoms can escalate into a full-scale anxiety attack. As a consequence of these symptoms, some individuals begin to isolate themselves, leading to severe difficulties in daily life. In other cases, the individual may seek out medical care due to a constantconcern with imagined illnesses or imminent death.

We all have fears, but when these terrors become so excessive that they cause symptoms such as nausea, dizziness, or a sense of unreality, they become known as phobias. This list offers a glimpse of the many types of phobias that have been named by psychologists and doctors. As you can tell from looking at this list, there is a wide range of fear objects, from achluophobia (the fear of darkness) to phobophobia (the fear of phobias.) Some people even experience samhainophobia, or the fear of Halloween.

Attempting to compile a comprehensive list of phobias would be a futile exercise because almost anything could potentially become an object of fear. Many of these phobias arise due to traumatic experiences, although there is some evidence that phobias may run in families.

While we all have fears, you should consult a doctor if your fear of an object or situation is interfering with your personal relationships or functioning at school, home, or work. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), 75% of people suffering from specific phobias are able to overcome their fear when treated with cognitive behavioral therapy.

6PHOBIA.A photographic study of phobia. From this page onward you will see a physcological experiment. We each got people that we knew to have extreme phobias. Then we told them we wanted to confront them with theirphobia and photograph their response.. The subjects of this experiment didn’t know exactly how they where going tohave to face their phobia.

In some of the more extreme cases they where merely shown a photograph or image of the thing they fear.

The subjects of this experiment are all consentingadults and where not forced to experience this.

In the following pages you can see the thing theywhere shown on the left and their reaction on theright hand page.
