Challenges of Todays Telecom Network and NFV Adoption
High Network Intricacy
• Time to deploy Multiple acquisition, resulted in complex, fragile network topologies
• Multiple upgrade paths & maintenance schedules
Agility Low flexibility
• Underutilized network resources can not be used for any other function network
• Each of the infra elements having its own proprietary set of commands, API and integration techniques
Efficiency
Infrastructure
integration difficultiesDifficult to Manage
multiple EMS, units
Customer experience Time to marketHigh availability
• CSPs would adopt NFV to
address these challenges
• Adoption would be in
phased manner. Can start
with Virtualization of Core
and Edge and then moving
towards end points or vise
a versa.
• Both Hardware networks
(legacy) and NFV would co-
exist for some more years

Implications on People Process Tools
People Process Tools
• Network operational skills to
software skills.
More programming and scripting
knowledge in addition to specific
network function knowledge
• Roles and responsibilities will
mutate
• Company culture to change
• Business processes re-alignment
• Establishing and realigning
operational workflows which will
address points of failures in timely
manner to meet the SLAs
• Integration & automation between
legacy and NFV environment
• Consolidation plan and Integration
with existing platforms with focus
on Standardization and
Compliance
• Holistic security designs to be
relooked
• Monitoring capability of VM layer,
NFV apps performance,
Interconnect performance etc.

Roles & Responsibilities
• The CTO and CIO will remain as two separate roles particularly in large operators — but might merge under a CTIO
group after complete adoption and maturity.
• The CIO’s organization increasingly takes on network operations while the CTO’s responsibilities become future focused.
• New roles would be created
CTO CIO Emerging Roles CMO
• Future focused
• Legacy migration
• Biz and network impact due to adoption of new technologies
• Operations focused
• Takes on more ops responsibilities (SF & SA)
• DevOps Engineers
• IT generalists
• SDN Engineers
• Cloud orchestration engineering
• Technical & feature focused
• Works closely with CIO org

Ideas To Manage Transition Smoothly
• Managed Services providers can be leveraged to handle legacy operations
• Managed service providers can contribute to great extent in testing, integration of new automations.
• Managed services operators can help achieving cost effective structures for carriers in SDN and NFV journey
Focus on process
re-engineering while
adopting NFV
Engage a MSP to
handle legacy
network while CSP
focusses on adoption
of NFV
Involve MSP in
migration process so
that NFV network
can be managed
more effectively in
future
Build KEDB from day 1
for successful NFV
Adoption.
