ABOUT DATA

Dierkes, Budroni - 8 Vienna – June 11 2015

The LERU Roadmap for Research Data presents the following sets this context (*) : “Research data, from the point of view of the institution with a responsibility for managing the data, includes: • All data which is created by researchers in the course

of their work, and for which the institution has a curational responsibility for at least as long as the code and relevant archives/ record keeping acts require, and

• third-party data which have originated within the

institution or come from elsewhere.”

Proposals for Safeguarding Good Scientific Practice (1998/2013)1

Recommendation 7/17: Safeguarding and Storing of Primary Data

• “Primary data as the basis for publications shall be securely stored for ten years in

a durable form in the institution of their origin.”

• “Commentary: […] As a rule, the original data and documentation remain where they

were created. However, duplicates can be made or access rights specified.”

Recommendations for Secure Storage and Availability of Digital

Primary Research Data (2009)2

• 7 recommendations to raise awareness among scientists and IT

specialists and motivate them to perform this task “as a kind of

voluntary commitment”

2.4 Measures to meet funding requirements and handle project results

• “[…] illustrate your sustainability plan”

• “Describe measures to safeguard and disseminate the project results […];

name the institutions/facilities that will be responsible for this”

• “[…] describe [measures] to ensure [research data] management,

curation and long-term preservation for future reuse. Please regard

existing standards and data repositories in your discipline where

appropriate.”

Supplementary Instr. for Proposals f. Long-Term Projects (2014) 2

• “The data documentation plans must allow for the long-term use of the

data.” 1 http://www.dfg.de/formulare/54_01/54_01_en.pdf
