Although the Web 2.0 buzz is noisy and sometimes deafening, it can be an exceptional tool to help librarians enhance traditional services. And with Web 3.0 on the horizon, now is the perfect time to ignore this buzz and actually do 2.0. There are so many widgets, new technological devices, and other Web 2.0 thingamajigs that planning to do 2.0 can be an intimidating task. Now that everything is 2.0, let’s follow a Web 2.0 principle and work together, share our “real-life” experiences, and have fun along the way.

Why 2.0?

• Out of the dozens of free tools available on the web which ones do I choose?

• Which tools will reach the most people with the least amount of effort?

A Google search for the phrases

• “web 2.0” will retrieve over 68,100,000 results.• “library 2.0” will retrieve 546,000 results.• “music 2.0” will retrieve 270,000 results.• “health 2.0” will retrieve 177,000 results.• “education 2.0” will retrieve 68,100 results.• “everything 2.0” will retrieve 27,100 results.

Jazz in the Stacks …

A look to the future that’s already here!

• Social networking is becoming more specialized• Cloud computing (Microsoft’s Live Mesh, Amazon’s EC2

service)• Mashups (Yahoo! Pipes, Microsoft Popfly)• 1-800-GOOG-411 and other speech technology• Semantic Web (Web 3.0?)• OpenSource Content Management Systems (Joomla,

Drupal etc.)• Microtrends: study the smaller trends because they usually

drive the big changes. (see Mark Penn)• Is singularity near? – machine intelligence becomes

“smarter” than human intelligence

So, now what?• Web 2.0 principles can help libraries collaborate with our users and

our colleagues in new and innovative ways; however, we need to remain focused on our users – not the technology.

• Trust our users to add value to our stuff. We aren’t the information gatekeepers anymore (Think mediator, interpreter, tour guide)

• Ask users not only if they like the tool, but also how it can be improved to better serve them.

• Most of our users are having wonderful experiences online (Netflix, Amazon, Flickr, iTunes etc.) and they expect these same experiences in the library.

• So, let’s keep doing what we do best, which is sharing, and don’t be afraid to try something new because it is better to fail at times than to never succeed.

• Most importantly, have fun!!!!!
