FOREWORD

In March 2005, EU eaders relaunched the Lisbon Strategy with a n

growth and employment. Building theknowledge society and leveraging knowledge and

innovation for growth is at the heart of this renewed strategy.

The Commission's proposal for the Seventh Framework Programme for Research

(2007-2013) is designed toplay a key role in achieving therenewed Lisbon objectives.

Rapidly evolving into "champions for growth", European TechnologyPlatforms are

playing a major part in helping to ensure that the Lisbon Strategy is real ised. They have

the capacity to address a wide range of innovation challenges, from the aboratory to the

market, in a coherent way. The results of this research can be commercialised, enabling

Europe to increase its innovative capacity to transform excel lence in science into added

economic value.

During meetings with the ndustrial leaders of technology platforms, I have been struck

by their enthusiasm andprofessionalism and their readiness tograsp this opportunity to

become powerful actors in making theEuropean Research Area a reality.

We see technology platforms as asmart, European way of working together to support

industrial competitivene ss. The Commiss ion services will continue to do all they can o

facilitate this important and welcome development.

KEEPING UP THE MOM ENTU M

Moving to implementat ion

More than 25 European Technology P lat forms have been launched, c over ing a wide range of technological

chal lenges. Most of these have now defined their objectives and are reaching the implementat ion stage.

"We will continue to act as the proposer, general promoter and disseminator of the Strategic Research

Agenda as thestandard point of reference for all aeronautically-related research work across the

Community. "

Aeronautics Technology Platform

"The Deployment Strategy requires close collaboration between private and public entities in order

to bridge the gap between the present research/prototype demonstration stage and the full-scale,

commercial introduction of hydrogen and fuel cell technologies. "

Hydrogen & Fuel Cels Technology Platform

"To achieve our vision requires commitment from those involved. It requires the implementation of

proven research solutions, thedevelopment of breakthrough technologies and an appropriate legislative

framework. In other words, every player would have to deliver what is expected of him or her to make

the Strategic Research Agenda happen. "

European Rai Transport Technology Platform

F u t u r e c h a l l e n g e s

A number of act ion points have been ident i f i ed:

In the shor t term:

■ Move into the operat ional phase by setting up research and development act i vi t i es;

■ Mobi l i se a w i de r ange of funding sources;

■ Develop disseminat ion and deployment st rategies, and take account of future educat ion and

t raining needs;

■ Assess key issues, such as i ntel lectual proper ty r ights, regulat ion and standards;

■ Implement the c ode of pract i ce for openness and t ransparency;

■ Explore the potent ial for l arge-scale, long- term publ i c-pr i vate par tnerships (Jont Technology

Ini t iat i ves' ) .

In the l onger term:

■ M on i t o r the implementat ion of Strategic Research Agendas and adap t t hem , as necessary;

■ Contribute to shaping future technologies and European research, innovat ion and industrial policies

at regional , nat ional and European level.
