• We would welcome greater participation and co-operation in our research from China

Understanding the Challenges of our Built Heritage

• Periods of Buildings 11th Century to the 20th

• Construction Techniques, Styles and Materials

• Climatic Differences

• Occupier Behaviour.

• Physical Impact & Heritage Values

Primary Energy Use

Energy Consumption

Protected or Listed Buildings

• Protected Structures or Listed Buildings can be protected through planning

• In some cases this fails due to the BER

• Many Buildings of Historic and Heritage Value are not Listed and therefore are at

risk

• We need more Legislative Tools

Directive 2006/32/EC

• On Energy End-Use Efficiency, Energy Services & repealing Council Directive 93/76/EEC

• This is further to the “Kyoto Commitments”• Most European Countries ratifed it in 2009• Create the BER (Building Energy Rating) or the

EPC (Energy Performance Certificate)• If you sell or rent your residence you must have

a BER or EPC• Heritage Properties Exempted• We believe this has a negative impact on the

built heritage
