What are the Definitive Surrealist

Conventions?

Jon Black

Making a Surrealist Short Film

JUNE/JULY 2015

Why I chose EPQ and Surrealism• I chose EPQ because it seemed a great opportunity to make

something and get a grade for it.• I knew I was going to create a film for an Extended Project, yet

didn’t have a genre in mind for it.• I came across Surrealism when watching NBC series

“Hannibal”.• In doing some further research, I found out this was a genre

that presented films as dream like and nonsensical, often using experimental film techniques and subverting tropes and conventions of more mainstream films.

HISTORY OF SURREALISM• This guy is super important!

User Feedback“What is going on? (In the best possible way)”

“Initially slightly confused by the film as to what was going on. However after further thought come to realise that it's about how work and stress can affect the mind of young adults. The slow mental suffering which then begins to affect their entire lives until they are engulfed with so much anxiety that they breakdown, or as the film shows it tear things apart or inflict the rage on themselves.”

“It's very crazy and disjointed, it sort of makes me think the characters have taken drugs with the last eye shot. The music is also quite creepy and it makes me think of a french silent film.”

“It's very oddly calming, with the music and all, even though it's rather sinister.”

“Confused yet relaxed” “It's very dream like, even though the characters are going through a lot you feel removed from it by the music and lack of sound from them”
