Nucleic acids store and transmit hereditary, or genetic, information.

The two kinds of nucleic acids are:

• Ribonucleic acid (RNA)

• Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA)

Nucleic acids are made from

monomers known as nucleotides.

The three parts of nucleotide are:

• A 5-carbon sugar

• A phosphate group

• A nitrogenous base

Nucleic acids contain carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and phosphorus.

Phosphorous is an element unique to

nucleic acids.
