VAroughneck was developed specifically for well applicationswhere rotation of the casing is required. It combines thestrengths of API Buttress with additional advantages ofVAroughneck as mentioned below.
VAroughneck – a robust casi with enhanced tor
Main characteristics of API Buttress and VAroughneck
API ButtressIn deviated well applications, bending loads
in the build zone result in axial tension and compression
loads on the connection. Due to the thread profile (3° angle
on the load flank, 10° angle on the stabbing flank), the
Buttress connection is able to handle axial loads without
inducing high radial forces to pin and box.
Advantage� Minimal risk of jump out failures under bending loads.
Disadvantages� Limited torque due to the J-Distance. The make-up
distance of the Buttress connection is not controlled by
a torque shoulder.
� Risk of excessive stress could lead to coupling failure.
VAroughneck connection at power-tight make-up
VAroughneckIn order to achieve high torque transfer through the
connection, the make-up distance has to be limited. In
addition to the minimal risk of thread jump-out under
bending loads, VAroughneck has the following advantages.
Advantages� With the VAroughneck thread design, the make-up is
limited by pin-to-pin contact.
� At least twice the torque capability of API Buttress.
� Controlled stress distribution proven by FEA.

Compatibility of VAroughneck with API ButtressVAroughneck and API Buttress can be made-up together without using a crossover.
If the higher torque properties are needed in specific parts of the string, they can be achieved
by installing a spacer ring to occupy the J-Distance or by applying a thread locking
compound, such as Bakerlok® or Tube-Lok.

VAroughneck – Tested product specifications
� make-and-break tests
M&B tests have been successfully carried outwith samples which verified the manufactu-ring tolerances. The tests comprised the complete nominal pipe outside diameterrange in combination with different gradesand various wall thicknesses. All torque-turn-diagrams show the same proper characteri-stics until the final make-up torque has beenreached. In addition no galling was observedon the connections after a minimum of 3 times make-and-break operation.
� Connection yield torque tests
VAroughneck has been extensively testedregarding torque capacity. Overtorque testshave been performed through the whole rangeof pipe outside diameters, grades and wallthicknesses to ensure outstanding connectionyield torque for tough field applications.
� CAL I series B tests
Multiple specimens have been successfullytested related to CAL I series B according toISO 13679:2002. The tests incorporated the 95 % VME and were conducted with bendingload, i.e. dogleg severity was 20°/100ft. Inaddition compression loads up to 100% effi-ciency have been applied on the test samples,with different nominal pipe outside diameters
in combination with various grades and wallthicknesses. In all tests the OCTG semi premiumconnection VAroughneck kept brilliant tightnessunder severe combined loads.
� Tension to failure tests
Neither connection leakages nor structural failureswere detected in all performed failure tests.
� fatigue tests
In deviated wells the pipes are subject to bending stresses that vary depending on the welldesign. Additionally, if the string is rotatedduring installation or cementing, the pipe connections are subject to rotational bending, i.e.cyclic compression and tensile loads exist.
To study this fatigue scenario, voestalpineTubulars built a rotating fatigue machine andtested the connection under severe rotational bending loads that simulated different welldeviations.
VAroughneck has been tested up to 1,100,000 revolutions without failure in the fatigue machine at voestalpine Tubulars, see picture above.

Due to the high torque values anticipated in the well design,
a connection with torque capabilities higher than those of
API connections was needed.
During installation of VAroughneck, torque-turn-monitoring
was used to demonstrate proper make-up, identify possible
difficulties and reveal any possible risks.
The recorded torque-turn-diagrams from field make-up showed
good and reproducible results. Therefore, the make-up can be
done without a torque-turn-monitoring system, if it is ensured
that the given yield torque is not exceeded.
