Why Else Do We Need English?

Big Ideas of English When we study English we are studying the making

of meaning.

We learn how to make meaning from texts and we study how to communicate meaning to others.

Making meaning has two interconnected purposes: understanding what is in the mind of the author AND THEN extending what we know (of the world and of our ideas).

Making meaning involves three key perspectives: the mind of the author, our mind, and the norms of the culture.
