What is the Endocrine System?

• Produces chemicals that control our body’s daily activities

• Help us grow and develop over the course of our lives

What is a hormone?• A gland that belongs to the

endocrine system• Use target cells to help our organs

and tissues on a daily basis• Adrenaline is an example of a

hormone

Glands of the Endocrine System

• Thyroid Gland• Parathyroid

Gland• Pancreas• Hypothalamus

Gland• Pituitary Gland• Thymus Gland• Adrenal Gland• Ovaries• Testes

Thyroid Gland

• Works with the mitochondria of cells to release energy our cells get from the food we eat

Parathyroid Gland

• Remember I told you how important calcium is for you?

• It’s so important for the function of the human body that there is an actual structure just for calcium release into our bloodstreams.

Pancreas

• Makes two hormones called insulin and glucagon

• These hormones help maintain the blood sugar levels in your blood

• Diabetics vs. Hypoglycemics

Hypothalamus

• Connects the nervous system to the endocrine system

• Controls the pituitary gland

Pituitary Gland

• Regulates growth, increase in height?

• Regulates blood pressure, feel tired?

• Regulates the water balance, if it’s low you feel thirsty!

Thymus Gland• When you all were

little, this gland helped build up your immune system aka “your protector from getting sick”

• This is why before you held your baby sister or brother your mom asked you to wash your hands

Adrenal Glands

• Adrenal glands produce adrenaline

• A hormone that kicks into gear during emergency situations

Ovaries

• This gland releases estrogen

• This hormone gives females their unique characteristics

Testes

• This gland releases testosterone

• This hormone gives male their unique characteristics
