Terms to Understand

• Service: A set of bits installed on a farm that is capable of providing some functionality.

• Service Application: A specific farm-level configuration of a Service in SharePoint.

• Service Instance: An instance of a Service running on a SharePoint server.

• Service Application Proxy: A pointer to a Service Application that exists on the SharePoint WFE.

• Service Consumer: A SharePoint feature, such as a Web part, that communicated with a service and makes the functionality available to an end user.

Services Infrastructure and Design Principles• You can deploy only the service applications that are

needed to a farm.• Web applications can be configured to use only the

service applications that are needed, instead of all the services that have been deployed.

• You can deploy multiple instances of the same service in a farm and assign unique names to the resulting service applications.

Disaster Recovery - Strategies• Cold Standby– can provide availability within hours

or days• Warm Standby– can provide availability within

minutes or hours.• Hot Standby– can provide availability within

seconds or minutes.

Disaster Recovery - Cold Standby StrategyYou can ship backups to support bare metal recovery to an offsite storage on a regular basis. This also includes that you have contracts in place for emergency server rentals, if required.

• Pros:– Often the cheapest option to maintain, operationally.– Often an expensive option to recover, because it requires that

physical servers be configured correctly after a disaster has occurred.

• Cons– The slowest option to recover.

Disaster Recovery – Warm Standby StrategyYou ship virtual server images to locations where you have planned the disaster recovery farm.

• Pros:– Often relatively inexpensive to recover, because a

virtual server farm can require little configuration upon recovery.

• Cons– Can be expensive and time consuming to maintain.

Disaster Recovery – Hot Standby StrategyYour business runs multiple data centers, and SharePoint is hosted on one of the data centers.

• Pros:– Often relatively fast to recover.

• Cons– Can be quite expensive to configure and

maintain.
