Adventure!

• What is ‘adventure’?

• What does it take to be “an adventurer”? Include 5 qualities an adventurer should have.

Becoming “El Draque”

-Born in 1540 in Tavistock, Devon-Began sailing at the age of 12-Captain of Judith at the age of 24

“The people of quality dislike him for having risen so high from such a lowely family; the rest say he is the main cause of wars.”—Gonzalo González del Castillo in a letter to King Phillip II, 1592

The Precursor

• Battle of San Juan de Ulúa (1568)– The English, under the command of Sir

John Hawkins, were defeated by the Spanish fleet– Drake survived and his hostility towards

the Spanish heightened– Said to be part of the lead-up to the

war between Phillip II and Queen Elizabeth I

Early Successes

• Raided the town of Nombre de Dios• Captured a mule train with 20 tons of silver

and gold–Was so much gold that Drake had to bury it

and return later-Returned home rich and inspired, continuing

on to more adventures

1577-1580: Circumnavigation!

So…what is it?

War with Spain

• Began in 1585• Drake started by attacking

colonial cities in the West Indies and Florida, and ships laden with gold and other precious cargo

• Destroyed 30 ships in the Spanish Armada off the port of Cadiz

Death and Burial

• After unsuccessful venture in the West Indies, died of dysentery 28 January 1596

• Died and was buried in his armor

• Time is running out! A virus has spread around cities and villages and threatens to wipe out humanity. In order to survive, you must find a new place to build a colony. Where would you explore first and what would you need?
