Testing Schedule

Good morning,Could you please confirm the format for the third and fourth grade mathematics portion of the upcoming Spring 2015 FSA exams? Since the tests are not computer based, will all Response Mechanisms mentioned in the Mathematics Item Specifications be utilized and if so, how?

The Reply:

The Grades 3 and 4 FSA Mathematics tests will be paper-based and any technology-enhanced items (TEI) may be modified for hand scoring or replaced with an item type that assesses the same standard and can be scanned and scored automatically. The item specifications are currently undergoing a revision to include more detail around the types of items and how they will be presented on CBT and PBT. Please check back to the portal in the coming weeks to see the updated versions.

Thank you,

Item in question: (also includes item #4)

The skill of taking half of a number was addressed in 4th grade (Ch. 8), please see the 4th grade standard below.

4.NF.2.4.cSolve word problems involving multiplication of a fraction by a whole number, e.g., by using visual fraction models and equations to represent the problem. For example, if each person at a party will eat 3/8 of a pound of roast beef, and there will be 5 people at the party, how many pounds of roast beef will be needed? Between what two whole numbers does your answer lie?

MAFS.5.OA.1.1 is only addressed in Lessons 1.11 and 1.12. There is nowhere else in the book that this standard is revisited. The test specs above include expressions using 1/2. If we didn't include the problem here the students may never see a problem like this.

We included a performance task in the CARE package for this mini that also used 1/2 and included a teachers note explaining that this is the time to discuss what "half" and "taking half" of something means ( divide by 2).
