Editorial Snapshot

Statement

1. Background Non-commissioned editorial illustration for the New York Times. The Truth About the Doomsday Virus? is an editorial that clears the air over confusion about the dangers of a strand of bird flu spreading via the air.

2. Target Audience Readers of the New York Times of an average age of 25-55 both published as a paper and online. It is aimed towards any who were concerned about the issue beforehand, but could also serve to inform those who were unaware.

3. Objectives The main objective is to bring about awareness that the virus in question was not as dangerous as some had thought it to be and that the risks in question were handled. The illustration is more representative of what some may imagine and how it gets carvried out of hand while also representing the issue at hand.

4. Obstacles The obstacle is getting the facts to people rather than the assumptions and words of mouth that spread between people and media especially with a touchy or potentially important subject as this one. With a fully put together editorial the information presented will appear sound and factual.

5. Key Benefit Those who were worried will be put at ease, others will be more informed, and anyone interested will be able to research the subject more themselves, be it through reading the editorial or searching futher.

6. Support Statements / Reasons Why The public needs to be informed on issues such as a contagious virus so that they know the labs are under control or what the facts are rather than judging the situation off of random bits of information here and there. Sometimes media takes a situation out of hand and then editorials like this are created to clear the air.

7. Tone The illustration encompasses the thought of a virus spreading through the air, an invisible enemy while also providing information that the editorial can expand upon.

8. Media The editorial will be presented printed as a paper as well as online.
