AvailableonlytostudentscurrentlyenrolledatCOM,SFSU,andCCSF OVERVIEW MarinCountyParks(MCP)offersforpublicuseandenjoymentanextensivesystemofregionalandcommunityparks,openspacepreserves,andtrails.Thedepartmentconsistsoftwodivisions,theParksandLandscapeDivisionandtheMarinCountyOpenSpaceDistrict(MCOSD).Ourteamismadeupofcommittedprofessionalsservinginthecoreprogramsofoperationsandmaintenance,planningandresourcemanagement,volunteers,environmentaleducation,andadministrativeservices. MCPisdedicatedtoeducating,inspiring,andengagingthepeopleofMarininthesharedcommitmentofpreserving,protecting,andenrichingthenaturalbeautyofMarin'sparksandopenspacesandprovidingrecreationalopportunitiesfortheenjoymentofallgenerations. TheVolunteerprogramisdirectlytiedtothemissionofMCPstatedabove.ItallowsthecommunitytobeinvolvedandengagedinthehealthofParksandOpenSpaces. POSITION Doyouwanttohelpengagethepublicincaringfortheirlocalparks? ThisinternshipfocusesonsupportingvolunteereffortsinhabitatrestorationandotherstewardshipprojectswithintheMCPandMCOSD.YouwilllearnhowtocoordinateandsupportvolunteereffortsandreportvolunteeraccomplishmentsbyworkingwithexperiencedFieldStaff.Yourlevelofresponsibilityincreasescommensuratewithtraining,skill,andcomfortlevel. DESCRIPTIONOFDUTIES YouwillworkonhabitatrestorationprojectsthroughoutMarinCounty.TheDistricthas34Preservesandroughly16,000acresspreadthroughoutMarin.ThereisavarietyofhabitatrestorationprojectsinlocationssuchasKentIslandinBolinasLagoon,RingMtn.inCorte

Madera,HorseHillandBothinMarshinMillValley,HalBrown/CreeksideinKentfield,andMt.BurdellinNovato,justtonameafew. Habitatrestorationtasksmayincludehelpingwith:

● Invasiveplantremoval● Seedcollection● Wildlifesurveying/monitoring● Plantingnativespecies● Scopingareaswiththehighestrestorationneeds● Mappingandmonitoringinvasiveplantpopulations● Assistingwithinvasiveearlyidentificationrapidresponseefforts● Etc.

Inadditiontoworkingwiththecommunityinthefrontcountry,youwillalsobehelpingwithofficetaskssuchascleaningtoolsandsupplies,inventoryingandgatheringdata.Thesearetasksthatallstaffandinternsperformandwewantyoutoseeandlearnaboutthe“background”workthatgoesintoofferingpublicprogramsandmanagingNaturalResources.Itiscrucialtotheimportantworkwedoasapublicagency.Theofficeandotherworkcompletedbehindthescenesaresuperimportantforourgoalofprovidinghighqualityexperiencestothepublic! Lastly,youwillhaveopportunitiestoworkoutsideoftheRestorationTeamtoworkwithotherparkstaffindifferentlocationsperformingavarietyoftasks.ClassesandtrainingmayalsobeavailableforyoutolearnnewinformationandtonetworkwithotherFieldStaff.Someweeksyoumaybemostlyinthefield,sometimesmostlyintheoffice–dependingonwhatneedstobeaccomplished.Theinternshipisacombinationofbothofficeandfieldwork.Iwillworkwithyoutocreateamonthlyinternshipworkplanandmakeeveryefforttoprovideawell-roundedlearningexperience.

● TeamupwithStaffinvariousprogramsincludingNaturalResources(RingMtn.,Stewardship,WildlifePictureIndexProject),joinaRangeronaRide-along,andworkwithTrailsStafftoimplementprojectsinourRoadandTrailsManagementPlan.

● Personal/professionaldevelopmentdaystopursueaspecialinterest,includingtrainingandeducationinvariousdepartmentswithinMCPandCountyofMarin.

● MCPuniformwillbeprovided.● FiftyDollar($50.00)perdaystipendavailable,plusacademiccredit.

DESIREDQUALIFICATIONS

● Directoutdoorexperienceorcollegeleveleducationinlandscapemaintenance,parksoperations,orenvironmentalstudiesisdesirable.

● Leadershipandwillingnesstoengageinpublicspeaking. PHYSICALREQUIREMENTSANDWORKENVIRONMENT

● Mustbewillingtoworkindependentlyforextendedperiodsinremotelocations,outdoors,inanyweatherconditions.MustbewillingtowearaCounty-provideduniform.

● YouwillreporttotheLucasValleyfieldofficelocatedat18JeannettePrandiWayinSanRafael.Onfielddays,youwillheadoutwithmeorotherstaffinourCountyworkvehicle.
