Your Role
As an Advocacy Chair, your job scope includes planning and implementation of year round integration of Advocacy, through your Relay For Life event. A few ways this is done include:
– Promotion & Recruitment of ACS CAN We CAN Club Program– Mobilize Relayers to fight back by holding Advocacy activities year
round– Recruit volunteers to assist you, by building a sub-committee
What Can I Do Before My Relay Event?
• Become a member of ACS CAN• Check out the Advocacy Chair training available on-line• Get to know your ACT Lead (volunteer) & ACS Grassroots Manager
(staff) • Work with your event committee to ensure Advocacy is on all
meeting agendas, and plan activities• Set a goal for ACS CAN We CAN Club/ACS CAN memberships• Recruit a sub-committee to work with you• Attend Relay meetings, and work with Event Chair or Team D chair
to ensure Advocacy is on the agenda for every Committee meeting, and Team Captain meeting.
• Work with your Survivor Chair to incorporate Advocacy activities with Survivors
• Educate and empower Relayers to attend Lobby Day
What Can I Do During Relay?
• Set up an Advocacy tent or table in a visible high traffic area
• Make your Advocacy education area attractive to those attending. What is going to make them come in & take a look around?
• Manage advocacy activities during Relay. (ACS CAN Laps, recognition of ACS CAN teams)
• Work with your Grassroots Manager to host local lawmakers
• Take an opportunity to “Walk The Track”
What Can I Do After Relay?
• Relay is over – Now What?
• Evaluate your impact!
• Recognize your volunteers, and any ACS CAN teams
• CELEBRATE!
