COUNTRY HIGHLIGHTS
Almost nine out of ten respondents in Ireland (87%) say helping people indeveloping countries is important. In fact, they are the third most likely, afterrespondents in Sweden and Cyprus, to consider this ‘very important’ (56%), andIreland is one of only four Member States where at least half of all respondentssay this. Respondents in Ireland are also much more likely than they were in2013 to think aid should be increased (+12 percentage points), with thepercentage now just above the EU average (68% vs. 67%).
Just over seven out of ten respondents (71%) say tackling poverty should be oneof the EU’s main priorities, although considerably fewer believe it should be one ofthe main priorities of the Irish government (47%): this figure has decreased by 5percentage points since 2013.
Respondents in Ireland are more likely than those in any other Member State(except Sweden) to say individuals can play a role in tackling poverty (68%), andIreland is also one of the few Member States where a majority of respondents arepersonally involved in helping developing countries (58%). There has been a fivepercentage point increase in the proportion prepared to pay more for goods orproducts from developing countries (now 52%).
When it comes to sources of information on development issues, a particularlyhigh percentage of respondents in Ireland mention adverts or media campaigns(22% vs. 9% at EU level).
Considering the most pressing challenges facing developing countries,respondents in Ireland are much more likely than those in the EU in general tomention health (47% vs. 39%), education (44% vs. 34%) and water andsanitation (42% vs. 30%), but less likely to mention peace and security (28% vs.36%).
As in the EU as a whole, younger respondents (aged 15-24) in Ireland aregenerally more positive about development issues than their older counterparts(aged 25 or over). In particular, they are more likely to say individuals can play arole in tackling poverty in developing countries (78% vs. 66%), and that helpingthese people should be one of the main EU (82% vs. 69%) or nationalgovernment priorities (59% vs. 45%).
