Ear Training Progression for Teoria.com Ear training or aural skills is a process by which musicians learn to identify intervals, chords, rhythms,
and other basic elements of music. Ear training plays an important part in singing and playing (especially
brass instruments), since one must be able to hear music in one's head and match pitch before it is
possible to sing or play it reliably. Moreover, reproducing sounds by singing them is a reliable way to
verify that they are heard correctly. Interval recognition is an essential skill for all musicians: in order to
determine the notes in a melody, a musician must have some ability to recognize intervals. All time spent
working on these exercises can be counted on the practice card.
Directions: For each level you must receive a score of 95% or higher in one ten minute session, in
order to advance to the next level unless otherwise stated. (94% is not good enough, you must get
95% or higher). Students must try to complete 1 level per term through term 5 (Term 6 you have
off). If you have tried for at least two hours, and do not get 95%, then turn in what you have done
so far. Remember the only way to get better at recognizing musical aspects is do it. How can you
perform it, if you do not understand what it is suppose to sound like?
For this section, Level with the A, in the settings- on the right where it says “Answer using”
choose Interval Name”. For Levels of B, in the settings-choose “Answer Using” choose Note
Names. You do not have to answer using the keyboard at all, but you can if you’d like.
For Each Level, show all work up to the last 10 minutes. So, each day you work on it, please
type in the date, time, and score at the top. For the last 10 minute session you must show the
settings page, AND the score after 10 minutes by using the “Print Screen” button, and pasting it
to a word program. DO NOT CHOOSE THE SETTING “Stop After 10 minutes”. You may
need a few extra seconds to answer the last question.
LEVEL 1: SKIP!! They changed things.

Octave (P8). Use the teoria.com website to help you achieve this goal. Students must print screen and
paste the settings selected, and a final screen shot after 10 minutes. If your score is not at least 95% credit
will not be given and advancement will not be granted. If you do not have at least 10 minutes on the
clock, you will not be given credit. Remember the only way to get better at recognizing musical aspects
is do it. How can you perform it correctly, if you do not understand what it is suppose to [correctly]

TRIADS
For Each Level, show all work up to the last 10 minutes. So, each day you work on it, please
type in the date, time, and score at the top. For the last 10 minute session you must show the
settings page, AND the score after 10 minutes by using the “Print Screen” button, and pasting it
to a word program. DO NOT CHOOSE THE SETTING “Stop After 10 minutes”. You may
need a few extra seconds to answer the last question.
LEVEL 7: . Using Teoria.com , read the section on chords, all the way until you get to “Harmonic
Functions” and then stop. Using Teoria.com again, select chords and “identification”. In your options you
must select either major and minor triads in root position. You must score 95% or higher in one ten
minute session in constructing both major and minor triads starting on any pitch. You need to show your
settings, and your final screen after 10 minutes in order to receive credit for this level. This will take you
through some really wicked keys. Remember the note that the website gives you, denotes the key you are
in. So, if it gives you a D# for your starting pitch, your 3 notes are D#, Fx (double sharp), and A#. In the
key of D#, F and C are both Double Sharp (just like D, only the 2 sharps in D are now double sharp, and
everything else is single sharp.) If you want to challenge yourself even further, give yourself a time limit
to complete each chord but show that in your settings screen.
Completed__________________________________
LEVEL 8: Go to the section on Chord Construction. On the options page select Major 7th Chords, and
Dominant 7th chords in root position. You must score 95% or higher in one ten minute session in
constructing both major and Dominant 7th chords starting on any pitch. You need to show your settings,
and your final screen after 10 minutes in order to receive credit for this level. This will also take you
through some really wicked keys. Remember the note that the website gives you, denotes the key you are
in. If you want to challenge yourself even further, give yourself a time limit to complete each chord.

LEVEL 9: Go to the section on Chord Construction. On the options page select Major 7th Chords,
Dominant 7th chords, and minor 7
th chords in root position. You must score 95% or higher in one ten
minute session in constructing both major and Dominant 7th chords starting on any pitch. You need to
show your settings, and your final screen after 10 minutes in order to receive credit for this level. This
will also take you through some really wicked keys. Remember the note that the website gives you,
denotes the key you are in. If you want to challenge yourself even further, give yourself a time limit to
complete each chord.

LEVEL 10: Go to the section on Chords, Ear Training.
Remember the note that the website gives you,
denotes the key you are in so when you add notes you need to be aware of the key they have given you as
the “Root”. If you want to challenge yourself even further, give yourself a time limit to complete each
chord.

From this point you may go in two different directions. Choos your direction by either using the
letter A (Inversions) or B (Modes) after each number. Once one letter has been accomplished you
may want to go to the other letter, and work the other direction. It does not matter which direction
you choose, both are extremely difficult and notice, you are only expected to achieve an 80%
accuracy on both levels.
INVERSIONS Level with the A, in the settings- on the right where it says “Answer using”
choose Interval Name”. For Levels of B, in the settings-choose “Answer Using” choose Note
Names. You do not have to answer using the keyboard at all, but you can if you’d like.
LEVEL 11A Go to the section on Chord Construction. On the options page select Major 7th Chords,
and Dominant 7th chords in root position and first inversion. You must score 80% or higher in one ten
minute session in constructing both major and Dominant 7th chords starting on any pitch. You need to
show your settings, and your final screen after 10 minutes in order to receive credit for this level. This
will also take you through some really wicked keys. Remember the note that the website gives you,
denotes the key you are in. If you want to challenge yourself even further, give yourself a time limit to
complete each chord. You may also want to go to identification first, and get a little practice at this before
constructing the chords.

MELODIC DICTATION
DIRECTIONS: For each level you must receive a score of 95% or higher in one ten minute
session, in order to advance to the next level unless otherwise stated. (94% is not good enough, you
must get 95% or higher). For Each Level, show all work up to the last 10 minutes. So, each day

button, and pasting it to a word program. DO NOT CHOOSE THE SETTING “Stop After 10
minutes”. You may need a few extra seconds to answer the last question.
LEVEL 15: In the Exercise section, choose Melodic Dictation over on the far right under Scales and

Melodies. For your settings start with two on the far right of the screen; start with Major Pentachord
quarter notes, and “all degrees, simple measures, quarter notes”, I-IV-V Arpegios Quarter Notes, AND

Melodies. For your settings start with two on the far right of the screen; start with Major Pentachord
quarter notes, and “all degrees, simple measures, quarter notes”, I-IV-V Arpegios Quarter Notes, “all
degree’s, simple measures 8th notes” AND “All degree’s, simple measures, 16
th notes.”

LEVEL 19: In addition to the settings above, choose one section on compound meter. This gets tough
so it may take time to become proficient at this. Be patient.

MODES:
Unfortunately, the modes section does not allow you to build things slowly. You have to do them all or
nothing. This makes it much more difficult to complete this section, therefore it may take a great deal of
time before you can identify these modes by ear. Using these modes is particularly helpful for Jazz
musicians, and improvisation.
Read and listen first!! In the “Reference” tab, click on the “M” in the alphabet across the top of the
screen, then scroll down to Modes, and Click on Major Scale. Read through the different modes and
LISTEN CAREFULLY SEVERAL TIMES to each mode. Ionian is the plain old Major Scale-Aeolian is
the straight old natural minor scale . Start with the Dorian, get used to hearing the Dorian. Can you hear
how the Dorian Mode starts on the Second Scale degree of the corresponding Major Key? In other
words, C Dorian, is a C scale from D to D. Phrygian starts on the 3rd
Scale degree, so C Phrygian is a C
scale from E to E. Lydian is the 4th Scale Degree, or F to F in the key of C, etc. My suggestion,is that
you really solidify the Dorian first by listening several times, and then the Mixolydian several times.
(Mixolydian starts on the 5th Scale Degree and is a Major scale with the b7).
CONSTRUCT THE MAJOR MODES FIRST!!!
DIRECTIONS: For each level you must receive a score of 90% or higher in one ten minute session,
in order to advance to the next level unless otherwise stated. (89% is not good enough, you must get
90% or higher). This is HARD!!! Be patient.
LEVEL 20: Under the Exercises page, scroll down to “Scales” and click on “ Construction”. Select
Major Scale Modes. Unfortunately, the modes section does not allow you to build things slowly. You
have to do them all. Remember the scale degree with the mode used, Ionian-Major Scale, Dorian-2nd
Scale Degree, Phrygian-3rd
Scale Degree, etc. as above.
Completed__________________________________
LEVEL 21: Add the Pentatonic Scales to the settings, or choose only the pentatonic scales.
Completed__________________________________
LEVEL 22: Add the “Blues and Bebop” Scales.
Completed__________________________________
LEVEL 23: My suggestion,is that you really go back to the tutorials and listen to the modes again, and
really solidify the Dorian first by listening several times, and then the Mixolydian several times.
(Mixolydian starts on the 5th Scale Degree and is a Major scale with the b7). When you get to the Ear
Training, From the “Exercises” page, Under “Scales and Melodies” on the far right, select Scales Ear
training. On the settings page, Only Select “Major Scale Modes”. It will test on you all 7 modes
unfortunately, you cannot break it down. So, if you need to go back and review the modes again, please
feel free to solidify a few of them first. Again, this WILL take time to master, be patient.
Completed__________________________________
LEVEL 24: Add the Pentatonic Scales to the settings, or choose only the pentatonic scales. When you
choose pentatonic, it gives you the scale, but it may not start on the root of the scale, it could start on the
3rd
, or the 5th but it’s still the Pentatonic Scale. The good thing is it only allows you to select Major or
Minor so you only need to start to hear the difference between the two scales.
Completed__________________________________
LEVEL 25: Add the “Blues and Bebop” Scales.
YOU DID IT!!! YOU HAVE NOW DEVELOPED YOU EAR BETTER THAN MOST
STUDENTS OF MUSIC!!
