High Temperature Durable Label
Polyonics thermal transfer printable polyimide label
materials include durable next generation top coats
formulated to resist abrasion, not soften or yellow at high
temperatures and withstand the harsh highly active fluxes. The
materials include thermally stable polyimide and aggressive
pressure sensitive adhesives (PSA) that are designed to
remain affixed to PCBs through wave solder, reflow and
high pressure washes. They have also been rigorously tested
and approved by flux makers Alpha Metals and Kester and
cleaning solutions makers Kyzen and Zestron.

PCB manufacturers are
constantly evolving their
soldering and wash
processes to increase the quality
and reliability of their products
while reducing cycle times and
costs. Highly active ORH1, water
based and no clean fluxes along with higher soldering
temperatures are all popular along with high pressure
washes. The miniaturization of electronics also requires
fixturing that can cause abrasion to labels.
Next Generation Label Materials
Polyonics has developed
a growing family of label
materials specifically
designed to withstand the
types of highly active fuxes
used in today’s harsh PCB
manufacturing processes. The
materials include durable next generation thermal
transfer printable topcoat chemistries that are abrasion
and chemical resistant, maintain a high level of contrast
and remain readable throughout even the harshest
process. In addition, several ESD-Safe™ options are
available that help protect ESD sensitive devices.
Improved ORH1 and Abrasion Resistance
A second benefit of the durable top coat chemistry
is its increased abrasion resistance when directly
contacted at elevated temperatures during
manufacturing. Some PCB processes require labels to be
in contact with material handling devices, conveyors,
robots, etc., or with fixtures used to hold circuit boards,
components, etc. during soldering and/or cleaning. In
these applications, standard labels may soften, become
easily scratched and unreadable.
The image below compares the dramatic effects
exposure to ORH1 and abrasion has on standard barcode
labels (bottom) and the Polyonics XF-731 barcode label at
the top. The XF-731 maintains virtually the same contrast
and readability before and after processing while the
standard label is unreadable.
