Step 1: Surface Preparation Start with a clean, paint-ready surface. The surface should be free of loosematerial, dirt, oil, and grease. Priming is suggested on porous or slick materials. If necessary, prime with a water-based primer to ensure properadhesion (see chart at right). We recommend Sophisticated FinishesPrimer & Clear Sealer.

Step 2: IronMetallic SurfacerShake or stir Iron MetallicSurfacer vigorously to makesure all iron particles arewell distributed. Using a disposable brush, apply andlet it dry completely beforeapplying a second coat. Thelonger the second coat dries, the darker the rust color will

be: 30 minutes for a light orange rust, 12 to 24 hours for a deep red rust.

Step 3: ApplyRust AntiquingSolutionAfter the Iron MetallicSurfacer dries the desiredamount of time, brush orspray on a coat of RustAntiquing Solution. Therust will develop over thenext 46 hours. Once fullydeveloped, additional coatsmay be applied to deepen

the rust. As a true rust is produced, some rub-off or water staining may occur. The finish can be sealed, but may change the color and texture, so testing is strongly recommended.

Instructions When the Surface is Iron or SteelRust Antiquing Solution can be applied directly to iron or steel to create a rust finish. If you dont wish the metal to rust directly, butinstead intend to apply the Iron Metallic Surfacer over iron or steel, you should first prime the surface with a rust inhibiting primer.

Additional Tips & Tricks Works great on wood, plaster, canvas,

terra cotta, drywall, glass, plywood, concrete, metal, and PVC.

Rusting is a very organic process, so notwo finishes come out exactly alike. Results will vary with conditions andtechnique. We strongly recommend trialapplications.

Interesting affects can be achieved byfirst texturing the surface you will berusting.

Try a variety of applicators (rags, sponges, sprayers etc.) and techniques.

Always pour a small amount of productinto a disposable cup. Never dip abrush directly into the bottle, to avoidcontamination.

Several light coats of Rust AntiquingSolution let you adjust the final lookmore easily then one heavy coat.

begin immediately and the beautiful verdigris patina willdevelop over the next 4 6 hours, and be fully developedin 24 hours. As a true oxidized verdigris patina is pro-duced, some rub-off or water staining may occur. Thepatina finish can be sealed, but this may change the colorand texture, so testing is strongly recommended.
