Drop Out Law

By: Jacob Page

Final Project

Finish School• Kids should stay in school until they graduate so

that they can get the best opportunities to succeed in the future.

Created In 1903• The Drop Out Law was set at 16 in

1903, to accommodate kids that worked on farms and in factories.

New Or Old Drop Out Law?

• New:1. Have to be 18 to

drop out.

• Old:1. Had to be 16 to be

able to drop out.

Old Plan

• Currently kids just have to meet with the principal about them dropping out, and have a signed approval from a parent or guardian.

New Plan

• With the new law the student has to have a plan to complete their education before leaving the traditional classroom.

New Plan Includes:

• The plan :1. Work Study

2. Night School

3. Preparing for the equivalency Test

4. Alternative Programs

Until Graduation?

• I think keeping kids in school longer will prepare them more for what comes with being an adult, and set them up for better jobs.

Less $

• Adults between the age of 25 to 34 who dropped out earn a lot less than the ones who graduated.

Working While In School

• Yet some kids that are still in school, are already in the workforce.

What They Get Into…..

• Rates of teen pregnancy, substance abuse, and crime, are significantly higher among high school dropouts.

Prison?

• Nearly 80% of prisoners in America are high school dropouts.

The Bill

• States that if someone wants to leave high school, they must have a plan to work on there schooling in another way.

The Bill Critics

• Some parents think that the bill takes away the rights of parents to decide when their child's schooling is done.

The Bill Supporters

• Others say that it gives parents responsibility since they have to help there child find an alternative schooling plan.

Statistics

• Last year the New Hampshire Department of Education reported a drop out rate of 11.8% statewide, and a total of 2,129 students.

Video Notes

• So stay in school because these kids didn’t and they got into bad things.

My Opinion

• Kids should stay in school until they graduate to get the best out of their opportunities in the future.
