jaar oorlede is, se omkapmasjien(“overlocker”) vir Sidney skenk.
steeds onbekend.Hier is ’n paar wenke oor hoe om
brande tevoorkomenwatomtedoenwanneer ’n brand uitbreek:
) Moenie braai-areas onbewaaklos nie.
) Hou gedurig dop wanneer jy ’nparaffien-stoof gebruik.

What if matrics fail?Astheclassof2014hanguptheirblazersandpack away their schoolbooks, the nail-bitingperiodbetweentheendofthefinalexamsandthe release of results is well and truly underway.Whilesomemaybecertainthattheydidtheir very best, many others have to dealwith the realisation that they may not haveperformed well enough to pass or qualify fortheir chosen field of study.
“This is traditionally a harrowing period formatriculants who feel that under-performancecould sound the death knell for their hopes, dreams and aspirations,” says Dr FelicityCoughlan, director of The Independent Instituteof Education, SA’s largest and most accreditedprivate higher education provider.“These learners now need all the emotional
guidance and support they can get from thosearound them, particularly as it is essential thatthey regain a sense of perspective,” she says.Although disappointment, anger and anxiety
may characterise the first responses followingunsatisfactoryresults, thesoonerpeopleareableto move to a solution orientation in the face ofdisappointment, the quicker solutions – whichdo exist – will be identified.“Givenenoughspaceandsupport, mostyoung
people will regain a sense of control when theyare able to make a rational decision about howtoproceed.Asthereareindeedanumberofpossi-bilities for learners to pursue if they did not doas well as they hoped, this decision is not as elu-sive as it initially feels.”Options available to learners who did not do
as well as they hoped, include:)Writing supplementary exams“Here, consultation with the school is best as
there are very limited circumstances underwhich these are available for matriculants. Butwhere they do exist, theymust obviously be lev-eraged. Many institutions will accept studentsprovisionallyiftheyareeligibleforasupplemen-tary examination, but succeeding in that exami-nation is then required to remain registered,”explains Coughlan.
)Repeating the year“Where the gap between what you want to do
and howwell you did is so big that the doors areall closed, repeating the year is an option. Thereare things to take into consideration though. Now may be the time to be realistic about yourown ability to achieve the goal you set. In mycase, for instance, nomatterhowmuch Iwantedto, Iwasnever going to be able to dowell enoughin math to be an engineer.“The second thing is to understand that if you
are going to repeat the year, you must know ex-actlywhatyouneedtoachieve.Itmaybeprudentto redo everything, but on the other hand per-haps smarter to ‘bank’ the few excellent marksyoudidget.Beclinicalandanalyticalinmappingwhat you need.“The third thing is to think about where and
howyou are going to repeat. Depending on yourage and school policy, you could return to theschool you have just left; or you could enrol fullor part time in a school focused on eithermatricor the last few years of schooling. Alternatively, you could enrol as a distance learner and studyalone,withatutororonline.Oryoucouldconsid-er a combination. Once again – it is about doingyour homework.”
)Consider another higher educationinstitutionCoughlan says that if learners did not do well
enough to be accepted for their chosen studiesat their preferred institution, they should exam-ine all the other options out there.“Theseshould includebothprivateandpublic
institutions. Remember SAhas only one qualityassurance system, so if you enrol at a registeredand accredited institution, there are lots of op-tions still open in the private sector, whichmaysuit you even better. It is important to find therightfit, sospeaktocurrentandformerstudents, and do some online investigation to determinewhether you like what you see.”
)Consider a different course or part-timestudyWhile it may be too late to register at a public
institution, privateinstitutionsoftencontinuetoaccept enrolments if they have space left, andthey generally offer a range of exciting degree, diploma and certificate courses.“Fullqualificationsarehowevernotyouronly
option,” Coughlan notes. “Youmay alsowant tolookat focusedtrainingorshortcourses.Explor-ing something different now that your firstchoicedoorseemsclosedpermanentlyor tempo-rarily, opens up a new range of possibilities.Again, dosomeonlineresearchandseewhatelseis out there. Itmay be a pleasant surprisewhichleads you to your true calling.”
)Consider volunteer or other workopportunities. It maywell be that you need to spend the year
working, says Coughlan.“Opportunities to volunteer at community
basedorganisations–fullorpart timedependingonyourpersonal circumstances – shouldalsobeconsidered. Sometimes not doing as well as youhad hoped has the biggest impact on your self-confidence. Giving something back to the com-munity is one sure-fire way to regain a sense ofpurpose, and to recognise that this only has tobe a temporary setback.”

Daar is ’n Engelse spreekwoordwat lui, “Tough times don’t last buttough people do.” Ek glo dit is wat entrepre-neurs/besigheidseienaars moet onthou aan-gesien daar tans baie uitdagings is omdiehoofte bied.Sekerlik een van die grootste probleme op
die oomblik is die baie kragonderbrekings.Omelke dag tweeuur lank sonder elektrisiteitte wees het ’n groot impak op enige onderne-
ming.
nemer ingelig isvanwat julle gaandoenomdiesituasieaantespreek?
In tye soos die het ons besig-heidsleiers nodig “that will rise to the occasi-on.”

New joints could come soonerTheWesternCapeHealthMinister,Theuns Botha, has announced aninnovative intervention to addressthe problem of long waiting listsfor hip and knee replacements.
Many people in the province havehad a long wait for joint replacementsurgery, which causes great discom-fort and pain daily. In addition, thebacklog has been increasing fasterthan the department can address, since more patients are added weeklyto the operating waiting list.An active intervention was thus re-

2014/15 financial year) the depart-ment has allocated an additionalR6 million while a further R17,5 mil-lion has been made available for thenext financial year (2015/16).Through this allocation of addition-
al funds, about 300 of the most severecases (patients with the greatest de-gree of disability) will now be operat-ed on.Asa result, those on thewaitinglist will also experience shorter wait-ing times for surgery.A central electronic waiting list for
elective hip andknee surgeryhas alsobeen established. This system, which
is based on an electronic central plat-form,will linkall facilities in theprov-ince where elective joint surgerytakes place. This surgery is currently offered at
eight hospitals in the Western Cape:PaarlHospital, thenewSomersetHos-pital, Groote Schuur Hospital, Tyger-bergHospital,WorcesterHospital,Ge-orge Hospital, Victoria Hospital andMitchell’s Plain Hospital. The electronic waiting list will en-
sure that wherever the patient livesin the Western Cape, they will have
an equal and fair chance to undergotherequiredsurgeryat theearliestop-portunity.“With this project, the department
shows it can find innovative solutionsto difficult challenges. It is a huge im-provement for the patient-centred ap-proach.”“We know that resources are limit-
ed in public health care. Therefore itbecomes very important to worksmarter to stretch the health rand,”Botha saidDrStephanFourie, supported byDr
Paul Rowe of the department, has de-veloped the system that enables thereto be a single waiting list that is cen-trally administered. As a result all state orthopaedic sur-
geons will now use a common set ofcriteria to assess the urgency of theindividual patient’s requirements forjoint replacement. This is then collected on the provin-
cial data base which is the first of itskind in South Africa. Each hospital’s caseload, ability to
offer surgery and monitor their wait-ing lists and waiting times can nowbe centrally managed.Currently 1 800 patients have been
placed on the provincial electronicwaiting list.
At the press conference were, from left Ro-nald de Kock and Rev John Frye - both pa-tients who benefitted from the new interven-tion – Western Cape Health Minister TheunsBotha, and the head of the department, ProfCraig Househam.
