HAVING AN AUDIENCE…

Benefits the presenter through:

• Purposefulness and motivation for communication

• Authentic application of language

• Increased focus on communicating with clarity

• Opportunity to shape a message for the receiver(s) of the message

• Opportunity to receive feedback regarding their message

BUT WHAT DOES THE AUDIENCE DO?

AN ACCOUNTABLE AUDIENCE…

• Actively engages with the presenter, his or her ideas, and the target language.

• Has increased content and language learning opportunities.

• Is more highly motivated.

• Is less likely to disrupt or engage in off-task behaviors.

NOVICE LOW

Presentational Speaking:• I can present information about

myself and some other very familiar topics using single words or memorized phrases.

Interpretive Listening:• I can recognize a few

memorized words and phrases when I hear them spoken.

Presentational Speaking:• Oral reading of “I am”

poem completed using sentence frames and target vocabulary (narrate and inform)

Interpretive Listening:• On a checklist with target

vocabulary used in “I am” poems, audience members write name(s) / initials of classmates who used each word/expression in their poems.

Interpretive Listening:• Consider arguments and

evidence offered and determine whether or not you agree and why.
