OAI-PMH

Open Archives InitiativeProtocol for Metadata

Harvesting

…is used in New Zealand by…

• KRIS Participants– All the universities and some polytechnics

• Te Papa and NZETC (testing)

• And now Kete– DigitalNZ Kete– Kete Horowhenua– The APN Ketes– And others we’re testing

What’s good about OAI-PMH?

• A standard

• Simple

• Basic Dublin Core is required

• Incremental harvesting

• Any other metadata format can be supported

What’s bad about OAI-PMH?

• A standard (well, not really)

• Simple relative to complex alternatives

• Basic Dublin Core is required even when it is not appropriate

• Any other metadata format can be supported but since they are all optional not many OAI-PMH data providers bother and they all do things differently

OAI-PMH and Kete: To do list

1. Some Kete records seem to cause problems

2. We’re not really complying with the OAI-PMH standard

3. We need a national metadata application standard for harvesting detailed metadata (this is not just a Kete problem)
