Here’s what we’re going to do today…

• Digital Cameras– Buttons and menus– Taking a picture– Saving the picture to your computer– Inserting pictures into MS Office applications– Charging batteries

Here’s what we’re going to do today…

• Scanners– Scanning an image– Saving a scanned image– Locating a scanned image on your computer– Inserting scanned images into MS Office

applications– Copying an image

Basic Camera Capabilities…• Take pictures quickly and easily• View pictures that have been taken on the LCD

screen• Delete pictures that you don’t want to keep• Zoom in and out• Flash• Adjust sizing and image quality of picture• Add effects

– Negative, sepia, black and white, solarize

Activity - Taking a Picture…• Find a partner or two and send one person up

for a camera and a floppy disk.• Slide the power switch to turn the camera on.• Insert the disk into the side of the camera with

the black slider part of the disk going inward.• Make sure the Play/Still/Movie selector is turned

to Still.• Focus the camera’s view onto your partner and

push the silver button on the top of the camera. Hold it down until the screen says that it is recording the picture.

• Viola! You have successfully taken a digital camera picture.

• Repeat process for other partner/s.

Viewing a Picture…

• Move the Play/Still/Movie selector is turned to Play.

• Viewing multiple pictures…– Use the circular Menu button to move up to the arrow

buttons.– Click on the arrow buttons to scroll through the

pictures.

Transferring the Picture Off the Disk…

• Use the Disk Eject button to pop the disk out of the camera.

• Take the disk out and insert it into the floppy drive on your computer.

• On the desktop, double click on the My Computer icon.

• Then, double click on the 3 1/2” Floppy (A:) icon

Transferring the Picture Off the Disk…

• Click on one of the pictures so that it is highlighted.

• Hold down the Ctrl (Control) key and click the other picture.

• Right click and select Copy.• Minimize from that screen so that your mouse is

on the desktop. • Right click and select Paste.• You should now see the picture on the desktop of

the computer.

Inserting Pictures into Projects…

• Next activity – Inserting pictures into MS Word.• Open up Microsoft Word so that you have a new

document.• Click on Insert, Picture, From File.

• Find your pictures by clicking on the drop down menu and selecting Desktop.

• Click on the file you would like to insert.• Click Insert.

Repeat this process for the other picture.

Time to Delete the Pictures…

• Open up the 3 ½ Floppy (A:) drive.– From the desktop, double click on My

Computer and then the 3 ½ Floppy (A:) drive.

• Select both pictures• Right click on them and select Delete.• Then, click OK.

Buttons vs. Program Menus

• Buttons– Easier for a first time user– Does not let user customize as much

• Program Menus– You will need to be able to locate the scanning

program on the computer • Start, Programs, etc.

– You will be able to adjust the settings of things such as the file name, file type, printer, and location where the file is saved

Common Scanner Functions…

Email

Scan…• Scans document and saves it as an image.

– (BMP, JPEG, or TIFF)• Most scanners will save the file in the My Pictures

folder within the My Documents folder on your desktop.

• Using the Scanner’s Program Menu…– You can set the file name, file type, and where

the file is saved.

Copy…

• Copies the document and automatically prints a copy to the default printer.

• It does not save the file.• Using the Scanner’s Program Menu…

– You can set the paper size, printer, and number of copies printed.

File…

• Scans the document and saves it as a PDF file. – Portable Document Format

• Good for use on web pages.• Using the Scanner’s Program Menu…

– You can set the file name and where the file is saved.

Email…

• Scans document and saves it as either a document (PDF) or an image (JPEG)

• Using the Scanner’s Program Menu…– You can set the file name and the file type.

Your Activity…• With a partner or two, go out into the library and

practice taking several pictures.• As you are doing this, I will call in one group at a

time to review scanning.• If your group would like to take an adventure,

you may choose to walk around the school to do this.

• Experiment with the various types of effects that the camera has to offer.

• Afterwards, we are going to use PowerPoint to create a quick slideshow of what you found in your travels.
