TThe lower level of the Dexter District Library wasconverted into an island safari Friday when travelinganimal expert Nelson “Animal Guy” Pearson visited.Pearson, an animal expert and owner of WildlifeSafari, brought an array of exotic animals for children

and parents to touch and see.“I want to make it magical and mysterious,” Pearson said. “I

want to be like the Willy Wonka of science.”While there may not have been any geese laying golden eggs,

Pearson did show the youth some rare animals for Michigan.Pearson started with a grand demonstration of animals found

in a tropical environment: a toucan, python, armadillo and evenan alligator.

He had volunteers come up and feed his toucan and also tohold a python. He took this time to educate people a little bitabout each animal.

“Just because you see bad stuff about pythons on TV doesn’tmean they’re all bad,” he said.

“I’ve always wished I could talk to animals,” Pearson told thekids, “but I discovered that in order to talk to animals, all youhave to do is listen to them; try to figure out what they are say-ing.”

Adam Drukman, who brought his children to the exhibit, saidhe thought Pearson’s show was a great message.

“Yeah, I think it’s really cool to know how smart animals are,”Druckman’s 8-year-old son, Ivan, said. “But I liked the little

Dexter resident killed in ATV accidentBy Art AisnerSpecial Writer

A Dexter man died whenhis all terrain vehicle strucka fence along Riker Road in

Dexter Township early Sundaymorning, police said.

Washtenaw County Sheriff ’sdeputies responded to the areaof Riker Road near OrchardRidge Road for an unknowncrash involving an ATV atabout 1:45 a.m., a news releasestated.

They located the victim, a23-year-old Dexter man, and

helpedparamedicswith HuronValleyAmbulancetransport

him to theUniversityof MichiganMedicalCenter.

Thevictim, identified as RichardFrancis Scannell III, died fromsignificant injuries at the hos-pital.

Scannell, of Dexter, was a

native of Smithtown, N.Y., butgraduated from Dexter HighSchool in 2005, according toan obituary submitted by hisfamily. The avid outdoorsmancompleted Schoolcraft Fire

Academy in 2006 and worked asa roofer for several years. He issurvived by his mother, LeslieScannell, of Dexter, and sistersDakota and Sydnee.

The initial investigationshowed the ATV was travelingparallel to Riker Road with agroup of other off-road riders.His vehicle collided with afence and overturned several

times, police said.A 22-year-old male passen-

ger, also from Dexter, was notinjured in the accident.

The crash remains underinvestigation by the sheriff’s

traffic division. Anyonewith information about theincident is asked to call thedepartment’s confidential tip-line at 1-734-973-7711, or contactDeputy Michael Williams at1-734-973-4391.

The Dexter Area FireDepartment assisted at thescene.

Visitation for Scannell is

Thursday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8p.m. and the funeral is plannedfor 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 21 at theStaff-Mitchell Funeral Home,located at 901 N. Main St., inChelsea.

A luncheon is planned atKatie’s Pub in Dexter imme-diately following services.Memorial contributions maybe made to an education fundfor Scannell’s sister, SydneeScannell.
