Some of the latest research around negative consequences for not achieving your goal:
A fair amount of evidence shows that negative incentives, and particularly the fear of losing money, stimulate the brain to take action in the short term. Of course, the Neuroeconomic research also shows that positive reinforcement from yourself and people around you work better in the long term. The argument is that positive reinforcement is the preferred route, but the positivity ratio research and the research on the effects of positive VS negative words suggests that you have to use between 3-10 positive reinforcements for each negative one.
