ACTION PAINTING (AGES 11-15): NATALIE KAY-FLAHERTY The camp goers will get an intro to the History of Action Painting, a style of painting coming out of the 50’s and 60’s. We will then collectively create a mural sized action painting to display during the final exhibition!
ART & MOVEMENT PARTS 1-3 (AGES 6-10 & 11-15): NATALIE KAY-FLAHERTY Part 1: The camp goers will be introduced to the connection between art and movement. As a painter and hoop dancer, I find great inspiration and gratitude in being able to move and use my body. The kids will be introduced to the tubing they will use to create their own hula hoops! We will measure each person and cut tubing to size accordingly. From there the campers will form partners or trios to work together to push together their hula hoops, and decide what they want them to become. Part 2: (Camp goers from Art and Movement pt. 1 highly encouraged to sign up for pt. 2 & pt. 3) Campers will use a variety of materials to decorate and personalize their hula hoops! This includes but is not limited to; decorative tape (characters, reflective or glitter tape), flowers, fabric, feathers, twine/yarn and much more. The class will discuss their hula hoops and what they want them to be (traditional, a dream catcher, a wheel, a “hula skirt”). If there is still time in the class after the decorating is finished, we will start to discuss Art and Movement pt. 3. Part 3: The camp goers will use their decorated hula hoops as art in movement to dance and do tricks with. We will create a group hoop dance routine using both camp groups to perform together at the final exhibition for family and friends in the theater space. Any child that chooses not to participate in the final movement routine may also choose to display their hula hoop as art instead.
BEGINNING SEWING (AGES 6-10): CHERYL ZEMKE Students learn how to use a needle and thread with basic hand sewing techniques to make stuffed buddies, fashion accessories and more!
CHALK ADVENTURE (AGES 6-10 & 11-15): NATALIE KAY-FLAHERTY Keeping art and movement in mind, we will vote on three large images to stencil outside. Once the stencils are laid down, the kids will alternate coloring between the 3 stations until all of the images are filled in. The goal is to collectively finish the images through teamwork and movement. (Each age group will choose their own set of images.)
CLAY TIME (AGES 6-10): ELROY GRANDY Using air-dry clay, children will learn the basics of hand-building to make creative figures of their choosing. Subject matter might include animals, ornaments, sculptures. They will learn proper techniques for attaching pieces together, preventing cracking and breaking, and more. The creations will be painted and make great gifts for friends and family.
DESIGNING ADVENTURES (AGES 11-15): KYLE SHARKEY Using D&D (Dungeons & Dragons) as a platform to draw, write and perform, students will design original characters and story lines in an exciting team building adventure. They will have so much fun, they won’t notice they are learning creative writing skills, mathematics, improv and developing characters and stories! At the end of the camp week, the students will have a game performance for their family and friends.
DRAWING (AGES 11-15): BETTY BORZA Students will learn drawing techniques using various mediums like pencils, blenders, erasers, chalk, pastels, charcoal and more to gain a knowledge in realistic drawing of subjects such as animals, people, faces and objects.
DRAWING LANDSCAPE & STILL LIFE (AGES 11-15): KYLE SHARKEY Learn the fundamentals and utilize different drawing mediums and techniques to represent landscape and still life. Students will learn perspective, shading, lighting and more. This camp will also take field trips to use the natural landscape for inspiration.
EXPLORATIONS IN PAINTING (AGES 6-10 & 11-15): DONNA HINSON We will use a variety of paint and other mediums to create abstract explorative and realistic paintings.
FREEZE! DANCE! PAINT! (AGES 6-10): NATALIE KAY-FLAHERTY The campers will kick off their shoes and make a mural sized painting with their feet! Inspired by Action Painting, the kids will create art through interactive dance and play movement. Parents will be able to see how their campers left their footprint on the program during the final exhibition!
HANDMADE BOOKS (AGES 6-10 & 11-15) - ASHLEY MEUNCHEN Make your own books, journals, scrapbooks, and sketchbooks. PAINTING & POETRY (AGES 11-15): LAUREN GILBERT Artists will explore the wonderful world of word and image! We will work through different creative writing workshops while also learning several painting techniques.
RAIN, RAIN GO AWAY! (AGES 6-10 & 11-15): NATALIE KAY-FLAHERTY The kids will create and decorate rain sticks out of tubing and a variety of multi-media/collage materials. Through movement and balance, the sound of the rain sticks can be quite calming. Through movement and chaos they can be loud and chaotic. The campers will learn how to appreciate their sound-instruments and can keep them as a reminder that not all rainy days are gloomy, some can actually be very fun. The older group may choose to create a themed rain stick, or approach it from a fine art or geographical location viewpoint (i.e., Australian characteristics vs. African characteristics).
RUNWAY - LIL MISS (AGES 6-10) – CHERYL ZEMKE A very popular class at the DCA! Hand sewing and crafting, we will create fashionable items to wear. Projects include: headbands, fun button sewing, various fashion accessories and tutus. During the class, we will be practicing how to walk a runway. On the last day, parents are invited for a runway performance wearing camp creations. Your Lil Miss will gain confidence and enjoy a creative experience in making something herself!
RUNWAY - TEEN (AGES 11-15) – CHERYL ZEMKE Campers will learn from an award winning, top industry professional! This camp will give inspiring fashion designers and sewers a chance to create their own items. Focus is on developing basic machine and hand sewing techniques. Campers need to supply their own sewing machine (no kiddy machines). Students learn how to operate their machine themselves and will be working on a basic elastic skirt, scarves, handbags and fashion accessories. Ms. Zemke has produced, coordinated and directed countless fashion shows. She will coach the campers on how to walk a runway and parents will be invited for a performance the last day of camp showcasing their creations.
SCULPTURE - YOUTH & TEEN (AGES 6-10 & 11-15): DONNA HINSON This is an introduction to abstract and realistic sculpture. We use a wide variety of materials such as clay, wood, paper-mache and recycled materials to make wildly creative art.
