Since the first issue of Depressed Midwest, I have been dreading the frustrating, bitter, and overall completely miserable season of winter. I’m sorry but as a skateboarder, there is nothing more I despise than winter and seasonal climate in general. Especially having been born and raised in Illinois, I have been subject to the drastic changes of weather from the terribly humid and boiling hot summers to the dry and unrelenting “snowpocolypse” of 2011. Seriously, being a skateboarder from the Midwest can really start to suck when the first snowfall hits.

We’ve all been through it. The frustrations of being stuck indoors, watching the same skate videos until your eyes bleed, paying ridiculous rates to skate indoor parks, and waiting for the day when you can finally step outdoors and ride your skateboard.

However, we somehow lucked out this year due to unusually warm weather and have been able to skate outdoors during months that were formerly off limits for skateboarding. But we yet again find ourselves confronted with the freezing temperatures of February and retreat back indoors to wait out the cold. Looks like Midwest skateboarders will be forced to sit indoors, watch the same skate videos over and over, and continue complaining about how this place sucks.

I had some help putting together this zine from my friend, Kevin Penczak, so I would like to extend a huge thank you to Kevin for volunteering his time, effort, talent, and not to mention truly great photography for this issue of Depressed Midwest.

Winter seriously sucks.
