Main presentation
Module title: Project Formulation
Module ambition/aim: The purpose of this module is to provide participants with
the awareness about (level 0), the functional capability to (level 1), the proficiency (level 2),
and the expertise (level 3) to professionally engage in and contribute to the formulation of
project initiatives that are of either organisational or competence development nature.
Module duration: 4 x 55 minutes, or a half-day, with all sessions implemented
Objectives/outcomes: After completing this session, and the associated Period A
‘between seminars’ self-studies and assignments, participants should be able to;
• Describe the major stages of a strategy implementation
• Outline major steps in the process of planning project initiatives
• Define the process for taking an idea into a concrete project
• Describe the major stages of a Logic Programming Approach
• Create an application-ready project initiative description
• Identify requirements for application funding
• Define the major steps in a contract negotiation process
PMC-Module 1 Learning Outcomes
Detailed structure of PMC Module 1
• This session will provide an overview of the concepts of project and project management, provide a description of 21 century project management approaches and illustrate how project management can be handled in a virtual environment.
Session 1
• This session will elaborate on the issues, concerns and considerations that should be taken into account in connection with the planning of a project that are aimed at facilitate the strategic implementation of a change initiative as a project. The prime focus of this session will be to generate an in-depth awareness/understanding of the pre-requisites for and the production of a high-quality definition that could be the basis for project planning and negotiation of financial support and commitment from management, stakeholders and potential end-users.
Session 2
• This session will focus on the development of practical skills in applying LPA to project formulation and project planning. The session initially includes a presentation that will provide an overview of the different LPA stages, as well as the tools and documentation approaches that are typically used during the planning / definition stage of a project. This presentation if firstly followed by an initial usage of some of the LPA tools, thereafter extended over to the more extensive utilisation of the LPA as part of the Period A through its LPA-oriented assignment.
Session 3
• This session will provide an introduction of the option to mange projects online via a VPO (Virtual Project Office) application, and give participants opportunities to prepare the definition of the project initiative to which the forthcoming ‘between seminar assignments will be applied to.
Session 4
Overview of PMC Module 1 – Session 1
This session includes the following learning activities:
PPT-based presentation of the principles of project management
Definition of a project, programme and an initiative
Description of project roles and responsibilities
Analysis of the functions of a project manager / project coordinator
Dimensions and components of a project
21st Century project management characteristics
ICT-supported project management, and virtual project environments
Introduction of optional self-study and self-learning tutorials on project management
Overview of PMC Module 1 – Session 2
This session includes the following learning activities:
PPT-based presentation on project planning and strategy implementation
Elaboration of the concepts of strategy implementation and project planning
Outlining of the process from Project Idea to a Project Definition
Production of project definitions/descriptions/specifications
Guidelines for application of project funding / sponsorship / financing
Introduction of optional self-study and self-learning tutorials on project planning
Overview of PMC Module 1 – Session 3
This session includes the following learning activities:
PPT-based presentation of the Logic Programming Approach
Outline of the process of ‘project cycle management’
Overview of the logical framework approach
The analysis stage of LPA
The planning stage of LPA
Question list to cover during an LPA-based planning initiative
Tools to use during an LPA-based planning initiative.
Exercise using the LPA ‘causal tree’ tool and the ‘roadmap’ tool on a simplified project initiative. The forms used for these tools are made available for this exercise is similar to those that will be used for completing the Period A assignments.
Overview of PMC Module 1 – Session 4
This session includes the following learning activities:
PPT-based presentation of the usage of a VPO application for a project initiative:
Overview of the major components of the VCP-based VPO
Definition of project structure within a VPO application
Definition of Work Package structure within a VPO application
Definition of Partner structure within a VPO application
Definition of Project Budget within a VPO application
Activity definition and involvement specification in VPO
Reporting on Activity Status reporting and Resource Utilisation
Dissemination and Valorisation Management using VPO
Project Management Reports generated by VPO
Demonstration of how VPO is applied in sample project initiatives
Overview of PMC Module 1 – Session 5
This session includes the following learning activities:
Review the learning outcomes and instructions for the VPO-based assignment:
Initiative Management
Roadmap to a change initiative
Converting a project idea into a project proposal
Establish a virtual community for a project initiative
Demonstration of how VPO could be used for completion of the assignment Demo during the Module 1 Workshop
Implement an assignment involving VPO application for a project initiative: Assignment performed between the Module 1 Workshop and Module 2 Workshop
