PASTORAL LEADER’S NOTES Dear Parishioners,
This Sunday, December 8, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception
of the Blessed Virgin Mary
This feast celebrates the Immaculate Conception of Mary, as she was conceived in her mother’s womb. Prepared by God from the very first moment of her life to receive Jesus Christ, God’s grace preserved Mary from sin from the womb to the end of her life because of her role in the mystery of salvation as the Mother of God.
Today’s solemnity praises God for the hope and possibility that Mary embodies as we turn to our Blessed Mother to learn from the first and most important relationship Jesus Christ experienced among us.
This day is also the Patronal Feast day of the United States of America AND both Winneconne and Omro parishes’ Feast Day! How great that this feast falls on a Sunday so we can celebrate the gift of our parishes in the communities of Omro and Winneconne!
To celebrate this day with your family AND the sin-less-ness of Mary from the moment of her conception make a PURE WHITE DINNER together. What about making chicken alfredo or some kind of fish. Maybe you could serve it with noodles or rice and a side of cauliflower. And don’t forget some white cake with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream for dessert along with a tall glass of white milk and maybe a bit of white chocolate! Before you begin your dinner be sure to pray the “Hail Mary” together.
I’m sure this will be a dinner you and your family won’t forget. And who knows, maybe it is something your family will want to do next year on this feast of Mary.

Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe
Thursday, December 12
The story of Our Lady of Guadalupe begins in 1531. On December 9, Juan Diego,
a native Aztec peasant, was walking along a country trail near present-day Mexico
City when suddenly a radiant cloud appeared, and within it stood an Indian maiden
dressed like an Aztec princess. The lady spoke to him in his own language and sent
him to the bishop of Mexico to instruct him to build a chapel in the place where the
lady appeared.
Juan Diego, an indigenous peasant farmer, had no status, power or influence with which to impress the
bishop, yet he followed Our Lady’s request. Risking rejection or even ridicule, he returned twice with his
amazing story of the vision. Finally, with blooming roses packed in his tilma (poncho), and the miraculous
icon that emerged beneath them Our Lady helped Juan Diego persuade the bishop and eventually a church
was built on the hill where Mary appeared to Juan Diego.
To celebrate this feast with your family serve a Mexican meal. This could include, tacos, burritos, chips and
salsa. Don’t forget to decorate the table with a rose or a vase of flowers.

STEWARDSHIP NEWS December 8 —2nd Sunday of Advent
Gospel: Matthew 3:1-12 The Preaching of John the Baptist.
Matthew 3:3 It was of him that the prophet Isaiah had spoken when he said: “A voice of one crying out in the desert, ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.’”
How will you “prepare the way of the Lord?” One way, is to FOLLOW JESUS.
How do we do this? By building habits of discipleship…. 10 Habits of Effective Discipleship are listed below. Which will you focus on this week? 1. A Personal Relationship – A disciple cultivates a personal relationship with
Jesus, articulates it and introduces others to Jesus. 2. Prayer – A disciple prays every day. 3. Commitment – A disciple has a commitment to Jesus, his Church & to the
Kingdom. 4. Worship – A disciple worships every Sunday. 5. Study – A disciple studies Sacred Scripture and other Christian writings. 6. Openness – A disciple practices openness to the Holy Spirit and
responsiveness to where the Lord is leading him or her. 7. Participation – A disciple participates in the community and in the
Sacramental life of the Church. 8. Service – A disciple serves others in the community in the name of Jesus
Christ. 9. Generosity – A disciple shares his or her personal gifts of time, talent and
treasure with the Lord, His Church, and the poor. 10. Evangelization – A disciple evangelizes the world through word, witness,
works of mercy, and compassion. (Diocese of Green Bay | disciplesontheway@gbdioc.org)
One of the fruits of practicing these habits is PEACE. Reflect on ways you can do more to evangelize this season.

Thank you to the Congregation
Dear St Mary’s Parishioner, I want to express my gratitude for your congregation’s participation in the recent quilt raffle, which raised over $1200 for macular degeneration research at the University of Wisconsin’s McPherson Eye Research Institute. It was an extremely generous response, and we will use your gift to further the highly promising work being done on campus. Specifically, we will direct your gift to the WAIVS project, which is developing new methods of imaging the eye at a cellular and genetic level – a critical necessity both for developing new therapies for AMD and assessing their effectiveness in patients during clinical trials. I saw a picture on-line of the quilt that was raffled. It is really lovely – the colors are wonderful, and it is a reminder of the beauty that we are able to appreciate through the blessing of vision. At the McPherson ERI, we’re dedicated to improving the lives of those who suffer from vision loss, and I’m grateful to all of you for helping us achieve that goal. Respectfully, David M Gamm, MD, PhD
