school for the deaf in Germany

1760• Charles Michel de l’Epee founded the first free

school for the deaf in France

1760• French sign was established.

1776• Abbe de l’Epee published “Instruction of deaf

and dumb by means of methodical signs”

1778• Samuel Heinicke, “Father of the German

Method” (pure oralism) established a deaf school in Leipzig.

1780Charles Green of Boston became one of the earliest deaf Americans to receive formal education overseas in Scotland.

1782• R.A. Sicard opened a school for the deaf at

Bordeaux: wrote Theorie Des Signes (dictionary of signs).

1784• Abba Silvestri opened first school for the deaf

in Rome, Italy

1789• Abbe de l’Epee died.
